Listeroid Engines / Re: 6/1 Listeroid for sale in NY
« on: November 18, 2011, 11:12:40 PM »
Hey, that's not too far from me.  Do you have any equipment on hand for loading it into a pickup truck?  What's it currently mounted on, looks like its just sitting on the floor?

Thanks
Joe-NY

Take a stout buddy and a 5 gallon bucket  along,
Ad says the 'wheels are not tight. Take them off and load them seperate. Then one man on each side on the crank and put her in the pick up.  If you have no buddies around do same except pull head and block then you and your wife  :o can put it in the truck. The bucket is for small parts. If it were me, I wouldn't run it before it was taken down anyway so no loss motion.

I either copied the wrong link or am losing my mind.   I can't find the one now that I was sure was in Ct.  I think I need to get my eyes checked. ;D

I was going to say something along those lines yesterday Derek, but I kept my trap shut, ;D

Lister Based Generators / Re: 12/1

Hello, Being a Statesider I have not a clue how things are viewed in Ireland.  I am pretty sure that importation is legal there? I know of a fellow from Ireland who is dealing in the Chinese diesels if you have any interest that way.   As for HP the 12/2 is supposably a 12HP engine at 650 RPM. In theory it would produce the same KW on a generator setup as a 12/1 the differance being in the drive ratio to the head. The twins are not without thier problems, camshafts and drives can be troulesome but I would stake my power needs on a twin at 650 RPM over a 1000 RPM variant any day, it's just not a 1000 RPM design in my opinion. The Brittish stopped at 800 RPM I think for good reason. The original 1000 RPM engines were an entirely differant design, what we now know as JP engines.

I dont have a 12/1 but have it's twin cylinder relative, 25/2. Baised upon my experiance with it  Id go with a 650 RPM 12/2 twin before a 1000 RPM 12/1 single. I'm just not a fan of the over 650 RPM CS variants. Others sem to get along fine with them.

That is the third or fourth CS engine that fellow has listed, wonder where he is getting them from? Surely isn't importing one at a time is he?

Ron, I have the same head in 5 KW and I am pretty sure the handbook has a diagram. If you think it will do you any good I can scan and send it.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Lister CS 3/1 oil dipper
« on: November 09, 2011, 04:50:35 PM »
Gary,
My 1939 6/1 didn't have a lock nut either.  If you look closely at Bob's picture you will see marks in the cap where it is staked in place, mine was the same. That seemed like cornfield county to me ::)  and there was enough threads on my dipper so I added a lock nut when it went back together.

Sorry for hi-jacking the thread but every Indian engine I have looked inside of has had the dippers installed with the flats towards the sides. Maybe since they dont typically pump oil to the main bearings? I turn them 90 degrees so they are las in Bob's pictures myself.

Not sure about over there but here in the states parts abound for those engines. Our military has just made a bunch of them available as surplus plus we have the Chinese clones everywhere. A quick search on Ebay found about every part for sale new but of Chinese manufacture. With the military getting rid of engines I am sure that Yanmar parts will soon follow?  The clones are available complete for $500 and shipping. As far as I know they have a very good reputation.

Good luck however you proceed

A picture from the auction site. Hard to tell for sure from this angle but it looks to me like the cooling tank will work, maybe not ideal but should work OK. As long as the warmed water it not expected to run down hill or the cooled water up hill and the water level iin the tank is higher than the top of the engine it should circulate OK. The tank on my Dursley 6/1 is like that, level runs in and out of the block, and works fine.

Generators / Re: forktruck batteries
« on: November 01, 2011, 01:40:36 PM »
I am not an electric wizzbang either but I have worked where they used those things and they typically use the batteries until totally junk before they are replaced. Not weak, but junk. They would put them on charge forever, had special chargers for "bad" batteries, had chemicals they poured into them but I never saw much positive result of all the effort .Some people and places claim to be able to rejuvenate batteries, others claim it not possible, I don't know? Anyway I wouldn't put much stock into battery that a forklift place considered ready to be pitched, just my experience.  To test the batteries we would put the unit on the charger before the service people came for a specified amount of time. Then they  would come and check the cells with a hydrometer, then load test them. The bad ones either would not pull full amps at all or would die off very quickly. To check yourself you would need to get the load test data from the manufacturer of the battery and know how to charge it plus have some way of loading it and check the amps.
