Red Stone Engines / Re: The Redstone Diesel project
« on: November 26, 2009, 05:41:34 PM »
My Redstone won't be running till next spring. I built an I beam frame for it and mounted a 10 KW ST Head on it but I have not stripped it yet and spec'd it out. I have a CAT engine that I'm working on right now .. and a Lister 6/1

I wasn't really ready to buy a Redstone this past summer but figured I'd better get one before they were banned!  ;D
I'll probably be updating like crazy this cominig summer, as in I'll probably have lots of questions as I go!

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Re: How to mount the Cat Diesel?

I think I'll be going with rubber isolators too. I found some nice ones at Grainger! Nothing fancy (like the ones I'll be getting for my Lister), but these should work out pretty well........ unless someone else has a better idea! I'm still not positive though, all the engine/generator set ups that I've seen have the engine attached to the frame vis some type of motor mount, then the bottom of the frame has isolators

Anyone given much thought as to how they are going to mount their Cat diesel?. I'm thinking of making a base out of 2x2 box metal to fit the engine, generator, battery etc. I just haven't decided on how to mount the engine to mitigate vibration. Any thoughts?.....  Randy B

I think it was on the Lovejoy website, but somewhere there is a spec sheet that tells you the max deviation allowed for each connector.

I believe all you have to do is look at the manual, get the part number then get on a Perkins site and plug in the part #

OK guys I hope I didn't jump the gun with saying there is positively a ball bearing in the crankshaft. I was looking thru the manual a little better and think maybe what I was looking at was the camshaft. Anyway, here is the link to the manual with lots of good schematics. I'm heading out the door (of my office) for a 3 day weekend and will look thru this more tonight. In the meantime..

Yes, This Cat ( the 400 series, 2cylinder) has a ball bearing in the end of the flywheel side of the crankshaft. I can't get the pic to post. It is from the Cat 402C-05 manual. The "C" version is cast iron and the "D" version is Aluminum. I am confident enough now that I'm not worried about side load. I"m going to use a Hayes Stub Shaft and put a 7 inch Utterpower pulley on the shaft.......  Randy B

If I can figure out how to get the picture to post, I will

I have made a cad drawing of the bolt pattern if anybody needs a few dimensions, its not sae 6

Not sure what you mean. Are your CAD drawings "not SAE6" or when you measured the flywheel, the bolt pattern did not correspond to an SEA 6 (actually, I think its an SAE 61/2)

OK, This is not a service manual, but at least its a start. Its the Rigmaster website with info on their APU system. It includes info on our little engine... just scroll thru!...  Randy B

Listeroid Engines / Re: Anyone add a glow plug to their 6/1 ?
« on: August 25, 2009, 11:53:07 AM »
so would you have to have a 12 volt battery just for the glow plug.

(most lorries are 24 volt although not many might be fitted with glow plugs these days).
Regards, RAB

Problem is, I've NEVER seen any lorries here in the states! :D

Hey guys, I have one of the little Cat diesels from the SurplusCenter. I was planning to put a stub out with a 6 inch shaft on mine and attach a pulley from George at Utterpower ( and run it at about 2500 RPM). I know there was talk about the engine being able to take a slight load on the bearing but does anyone see a problem with one of the Uttepower pulleys?.. they are pretty darned heavy. I 'm concerned it might be too much weight hanging off the shaft!...Randy B

Anyone add a glow plug to their 6/1? I'm curious because Central Maine Diesel sells one and I figure that when I get old (like 110) it would/should make start up a breeze, but I'd like a little input before I buy one.  Randy B
