hello all   these cylinders ar simaler to old mercury containers ,if on mine site processing gold most likely  . peter

I needed to google mercury flask and similar images to the ones I have and that I have seen on site come up...

Something tells me I had better sneak those out of the garage before the wife finds out exactly what they are...

Hmmmmmm.....

Unless something happened to the Mercury and it changed into a black/blue almost carbon based substance...

The threads for the bung on the inside of the bottle has been coated with the stuff.

General Discussion / mystery cylinder (pressure gas cylinder)

What is it? or more specifically what kind of product would it have contained?
looks like a high pressure gas bottle. Bung on top is solid with no ability for the high pressure gas to escape. Only letters I could find was "Dalmine" stamped in the bottle near the top.
When full, someone would have to unscrew the top, open to atmosphere, screw it on to whatever appliance it was used on then pressurize it...

To make acetylene one needs to mix water with calcium carbonate.... Hmmmm it does have some sort of black substance in it....

I picked this thing up at a mine site that never really got off the ground.

Since the pic was taken I have wire wheeled it and found no other markings. I did start a thread on another unrelated forum where it was sugested this was a Tenaris Dalmine cylinder. That may be true and all but it still doesn't get me any closer to knowing what it contained and why such a high pressure (looking) bottle would have a solid bung on top. Every cylinder in the pile was the same. Some cylinders were shaped a little different in that they may not have been as capable of as high a pressure as this example but they all had the solid bung that had to be unscrewed before getting to the contents.

Engines / Re: Lister fr3 coolant and fuel issue
« on: August 31, 2011, 03:28:37 PM »
I'll ask the dumb question...

Was the filter void mounted in the block simply because it was a conveniant location for such a large filter medium or was it by design to preheat the fuel for some unknown to me reason?

I can see where some thicker alternative fuels would benefit from a preheat but simply running #2 diesel not so much...

Waste Motor Oil / Re: Suggestion for WMO trial......
« on: February 17, 2011, 05:00:49 AM »
Back to WMO in one cylinder and diesel in another on a two cylinder engine...

Doesn't WMO have more "power" than regular diesel?

If it does, would the cylinder that has the WMO being run through it not "carry" the more "lazy" diesel powered cylinder? The "lazy" cylinder would naturally have less wear...

Waste Motor Oil / Re: Wmo
« on: February 05, 2011, 05:54:46 PM »
I can't help but look at this whole debate as a "reinvention of the wheel" sort of thing. I have owned a cummins powered truck since '93. Even at that time there were dire warnings about mixing too much wmo in with your diesel fuel as engine damage would result. I never persued it much beyond "don't do it" so it didn't really come as much of a surprise to see Spencer's posts...

Clearly there is a way of processing waste motor oil into useable products. I posted a link in one of the other threads about a company in North Vancouver BC that has been processing 33 million litres a year for the last 32 years and producing a wide variaty of products.

The only real question is, can an operation like what they have in North Van be scaled down into something a back yard enthusiast can manufacture and operate safely and efficiently all while producing a product that is consistant in quality...

These guys have found a way to make all sorts of products from waste motor oil. At 33 million litres of wmo a year you can be sure it's no back yard operation. They have been in operation since '79.
I think they are even exporting their process... New buisness venture for yourself?

Then there are these guy's in Bangladesh? Come up with some sort of method of treating and blending with new diesel... (it's a .pdf document)

Everything else / Re: Heater/boiler/wmo
« on: February 01, 2011, 04:54:17 AM »
I'll also say those lumps of carbon the engine processes once in a while can't be good for anything either. Some of that grit will get down between the rings and cylinder wall and act just like sand paper. Have it happen often enough, and no more mystery as to what's wrecking the engine...

..... You mean I can't drain my crank case directly into my fuel tank??

but what I really want to know is, if a plane is sitting on a conveyor belt and the belt is moving..... Oh, wait a sec. Mythbusters covered that already! :-*

General Discussion / Re: Registration problems
« on: January 14, 2011, 07:10:37 AM »
Seems the 'bots have found a reliable way around the capta "security" with registrations. one of the other boards I am a member of mentioned they have new registrations answer a simple question such as "what colour is a blue car" and then manually approve the registration after the new user provides a brief description of the vehicle they own...

I dang near fell out of my char when I read this... so simple and pretty much made out of spare parts... (not really, just seems that way...)

Dilema? what dilema?

Your friend is still alive and has made a decision to downsize. He has set a clear boundry by placing the two engines off limits so it's not like your "taking advantage" of the situation.

Pick a nice engine, pick three, whatever you do be prepared to pay him for them. If he refuses start haggling and come up with every excuse in the book why you should pay him for the engine(s) Be creative with payment options. Something he has always waned, a donation to his favorite charity a trade up for one of your engines (that last one is counter productive to his end goal though...)

At the end of the day you still might walk away without paying anything for the engine but at least you will know you tried and he will know you offered and to what length you were willing to go...

He has given you the honor of first pick, grab ahold of it with both hands...

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: How is your cold starting
« on: December 07, 2010, 03:03:32 PM »
At -20C and below, if the crankcase is not heated and heat is only applied to the intake, the block is so cold that moist air entering the intake will freeze inside the cylinder and prevent the engine from turning at all. So applying heat to the intake alone can be problematic unless one can crank the engine.

Would you not be better off extending your horizontal intake pipe and setting up your white gas stove under the horizontal intake pipe? (heat the pipe alone rather than the air going into the pipe) I am thinking you would not get as much condensation from the combustion in the lantern going up and into the intake.
