Other Slow Speed Diesels / Re: First Crank
« on: September 16, 2009, 02:55:28 AM »
I filled the crankcase with shell synthetic Rotella.  Checked make sure it was not overfilled :)

I did use a big funnel to fill it.  Could I have accidently sent oil into the cylinders some how through a valve?  Or is this simply oil that they ship the units with?

Chris
At the Massey dealership I work at, the smaller tractors are really Japanese tractors, and if you pour oil into the top of the motor, which is in the valve cover, with a big funnel, it fills the valve cover cavity faster than the oil can drain down to the sump through the drain ports on the head and block, and ends up going through the crankcase breather tube to the intake manifold, where it either runs though an open intake valve, or gets drawn in as soon as the valve opens, and hydro-locks the engine with oil.

Take more time when filling the engine during the next oil change, and everything should be just fine. Using a smaller funnel will help there too.

Funny how all those still decent gas engines all of a sudden are JUSSSSTTT too weak to do the job any more, when a nice little engine like this comes along.

Wife: Honey, I thing the string trimmer needs new string.
US guys: I think the engine won't turn the new spool of string if I refill it honey! But I can boost the trimmer with a nice little diesel that will help you do ALL the trimming that you like to do so that the property looks better than anyone's around for a hundred miles, babycakes! Let's go out for dinner tonight!

ANY excuse to justify buying something like this that is too good to pass up!  :D

Don't forget to burn biodiesel, just to show you really care!  ;D

I also thought it might be a question about how well a tarp might protect something outside. ;D

Sorry that whatever this is makes you feel that way Steve.

Gee...you mean I'm not the only one suffering with dial-up? Yay!!  It's a sort of mental torture to enjoy the internet sooo much, yet be stuck with 3k/s download speed. Youtube and the like are out. Web pages are becoming annoying to visit, because they are getting bigger.

We (my province) are promised to have high speed available by the end of 2009. I used to have high speed at my old house 6 years ago. It was great. The high speed offered is with a small dish and relay towers.

So close, yet so far.

Sorry for the rambling.

General Discussion / Re: Perkins 103-10 engine

I work for a place that sells Cub Cadet Utility Vehicles (side-by-side with a dump box on back), and one option is a Cat diesel, 3 cyl, 20 hp water cooled. Looking at the engine, you can see a Perkins tag on it. Only assumption I can make from that is Perkins actually makes the engine, unless Perkins re-badged someone else's engine, which seems odd to me in this case.
Good starting and running engine, customers claim they are great on fuel. They aren't quiet, noisy like my Kubota compact tractor.

Wish I could have one to play with.  :P

General Discussion / Re: Power Outage Today

My power hardly ever goes out here. The very few times it does, by the time I drag my 7kw genset over to the house, and hook it up, get it running, it runs for about 5 minutes, then the power comes back on lol.
Unless, of course, I have it apart for some reason and it doesn't run, THEN the power goes out for hours!

Glad a) your generator worked well for you, and b) no one was injured.

 :D

I can honestly say, of all the forums I'm in, and read in as a guest, nothing can get people stirred up more than a discussion about politics.

Except discussions about oils. No, wait, politics definitely does more stirring.

How about oily politicians?   :o

The heat caused by such discussions can add to the heatwave, and over-all global warming (to keep somewhat near the topic lol).

Doesn't make much sense does it.

Here in Nova Scotia we were promised cheap natural gas if they were to pipe it from off Sable Island, and sell it to the US.
Turns out it was going to cost too much to provide it to most of us (as promised), so they didn't do it.
I use wood for heat, and even that is getting hard to find around here, as most of it is being chipped and sent overseas. I will burn old tires in my furnace before I take the wood furnace out and put in an oil furnace (or propane or electric, etc), I will not be forced to heat my home with a method I cannot afford.

See? Things are just as screwed at this end of the country, Stan.  :D

It's supposed to go down to 7C tonight. In July. During the summer.

They claim 25C for the next few days. Our summers are short enough here, sure like to get SOMETHING before it turns cool again.

7C !   Pffftt!!

It seems the bad-roads thing is universal. The roads around here on the east coast of Canada are not so good either. Trans-Canada is decent, but many secondary highways aren't nice at all. Sometimes the dirt roads are nicer to drive on, especially after a fresh surface re-grading.

I can't understand why they re-surface the Trans-Canada highway every few years when it's ok, yet leave the beat-up secondary roads to continue to fall apart, as they haven't been re-surfaced in decades. Typical government.

BTW, I noticed this morning that a enthusiastic Rotweiller/Doberman mix dog cannot run as fast as a scared fox. The neibour's dog chased a fox (that is living under a tree on my property), and the dog didn't have a chance. I thought it was kind of funny.

I'm guessing my 1911 Winchester pump action 22 will probably get me in way more trouble with a bear than if I tried the screaming school-girl routine. Maybe if I used the Winchester as a BAT I might be better off.... :D
