Listeroid Engines / Re: WOOD BASE FOR A LISTEROID/USING 4x4 FENCE POSTS

I too, am at a point where it is time to build a mount after rebuild. I completely understand the need to bolt it to a huge slab, however, I would love to have a more mobile setup. I believe it is XYZER Dave, that has built a gorgeous mobile mount that is pumping water next to his lake. Now I realize that this "mobile" means lifting and placing with a tractor, but that is the direction I was heading down. Dave, if you're listening, how is your setup holdiong up over time?

Bio-diesel Fuel / Re: How much does biodiesel cost and where can I get it?
« on: September 26, 2007, 06:13:08 AM »
The reason why you need to be careful with B100 in newer diesel engines is because they are what is known as "high pressure rail" systems. The pressures in these systems are really quite phenominal. My truck has pressures in excess of 23,000 psi - VW's are now up around 28,000 and the new Dodges are in at over 30,000 psi I understand. There are some great benefits to these high pressures, but if you're using biodiesel that isn't washed, dried and brewed by an experienced homebrewer, the fuel can polymerize at those high pressures and become almost plastic-like. The manufacturers try their best to keep folks from using B100 beause the one thing that they can't control, is the type of diesel fuel people use. We can't blame them for that. Don't kid yourself about the quality of commercial diesel/biodiesel either. Some of the absolute worst biodiesel comes from commercial producers. Most commercial producers simply cannot devote the TLC to wash each batch 5-6 times to remove all excess lye and methanol and then drying to make sure all the water has been eliminated. Time = money.  The best biodiesel is made by homebrewers, hands down. Just like the best beer comes from our nations microbrewerys.
Making fuel is a wonderful thing, just don't pour your first attempts in your new expensive car or truck. For the first 6 months or so, the batches that I didn't ruin and need to dispose of, were burned in my old indirect injection John Deere, that would run on almost anything. Eight years, over 40,000 gallons and 160,000 miles on B100 later, it's a lot of time and energy - but it sure feels good recycling. By the way, our wonderful listeroids are of the low pressure, indirect injected type diesel engines that will burn anything, so all the small batches that you make - even if they are not perfect, will run fine. Just filter and go.

Listeroid Engines / Interior crankcase repainting
« on: May 23, 2007, 05:43:58 AM »
Has anyone decided to go the route of not painting the insides? I've got mine looking real nice down to bare metal, with no sand and a coat of oil. If I hadn't read here about repainting the inside, I never would have considered it. Pro's and con's please.

Listeroid Engines / My TRB's
« on: May 14, 2007, 06:35:38 AM »
I've got my 6/1 completely disassembled, all interior paint removed and overall it looks good. Even though my TRB's and their races don't look like they have been chewed up by sand in it's maiden factory test run, the bearings are the cheesiest that I've ever seen. The metal that holds the rollers in place is so thin that I can bend and twist them by hand! I've been reading you all here for a long time and some say they've had thousands of hours on their Indian TRB's and that they may be the best part of a Indian Listeroid, I sure would like to find US made TRB's. I've been in the search function for the last few hours and am not having any luck with any part numbers for good TRB's. Any help much appreciated. I won't reassemble this clean baby with those Mickey Mouse TRB's.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Lister flywheel removal

Thanks Rob -
I've got a shop cutting me out out a nice stout puller like you and Zeke have. I'm such a knucklehead though. I knew in my heart from the outset, that I needed this type of meaty steel, but I figured that I could "get by" with this or that. After spending 20 here, 18 there, 25 over there, etc.... I'd have already paid for the right tool, probably twice already. Must be a defect in my genes or something. I've been trying to change myself for years! I'll let you know as soon as job is completed.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Lister flywheel removal

I've been having the same trouble as Rob. Been fighting with that blasted key for two weeks with different style pullers. Zeke gave me a wonderful idea and I made a puller out of a McMaster Carr shaft collar - drilled and tapped 4 holes, 3/8 grade 8 bolts. Still no go. I've been so annoyed that I have gotten away from it for a few days. Keys have temporarily whipped me. Seems my problem is that the backside of my Gib key is angled and as soon as I begin tightening down against it, my pulling devices start to angle and then wedge themselves sideways on the crankshaft, creating far more resistance to pull agianst. Plus, I'm a bit afraid to tighten down against the Indian casting of the flywheel hub with the grade 8's for fear of cracking the flywheel.

Hey Zeke -
I had no idea that the Dallas folks stopped talking to you. That definately won't be good for their future customer base lurking here about their customer service.  My 6/1 is now without head and jug, and the crank is next, and if they don't think there is sand in their engines, I'm close enough to show them. Don't sweat it Zeke, with the effort you have put into cleaning yours up, it will have a wonderful life with you. I'm going to try and do as thorough a job.

Well Zeke -
I wish you would have posted the "BUYER BEWARE" a bit earlier ;D. I was by there and picked up a 6/1 from them today. It's sitting on my trailer under a tarp in the pouring freezing rain, and it looks like it's gonna be a cold, miserable, 4 to 5 days here in north Texas. I've been lurking for a long time, and now that I'm finally an owner, and an official member of the club - I can make my first post. As soon as the ice storm passes, let the teardown begin! These things seem to be Indian version of the mexican pinata's. I've read about ya'll breaking them open to find rags, t-shirts, washers, sand and other trinkets. Can't wait to share what I find in my pinata. It's good to be here.
