I like the Permatex brand Teflon Thread sealant best.

A&P/IA with Commercial/Instrument.  Used to own a Cessna 150, now have a homebuilt. Dad has a 177 Cardinal RG.

I would go with a common truck fuel filter myself...but whatever is easy to find and use will be better than what you have!

A while back on eBay, a guy was selling a BUNCH of Fleetguard FS1000 filters with the aluminum threaded base. I bought 12 filters and 4 bases. The filter is about 250mm tall and about 100mm in diameter. Mine is not mounted directly on the engine.  The availability of these filters is excellent, as they are very common.

48 volts X 2.5 amps = 120 watts of power
12 volts X 10 amps = 120 watts of power
Same thing !
The amount of power (wattage) used from the batteries is the same.
veggie

It looks good on paper, but in practical terms (speaking from experience) 12 volt systems running high amps have way more issues and require more maintenance than 48 volt systems.

The cost of the wire along should be enough to go with 48 volts. You can NOT cheap out by not using massive cables on 12 volt systems or you will regret it!

I can't say for sure, but it *appears* that the 48 volt equipment is also more efficient as far as heat losses go.

I have a ZS1110.... a little odd since it seems most of the support is for the 1115 engines.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to order?
I have NO SPARES at all and would at least like to get some common bits, at least those which can not be made simply.

Anyone have a procedure for balancing power output on the two cylinders on a twin ?

Easy - you need a way to check exhaust temp for each cylinder.

You would need either two K-style thermocouples with an EGT gauge....or maybe just a cheap hand-held infrared "non-contact" thermometer?

How much air volume do you need?

An auto air conditioner pump won't move a LOT of air. It is best to have one fill a large tank over time if you go that route.

If you need a lot of volume, then you need a big pump with an unloading valve.

The York style (from Fords and most farm equipment) is the most popular choice of pump.

Waste Motor Oil / Re: WMO use in listers/listeroids

You probably have seen my posts re the soot I am getting. I still have not completely satisfied myself about where exactly the soot comes from. One of the theories is that it's from the fuel and possibly the suspended soot in the oil.

Hmmmmm.....I often will run 10%-15% filtered UMO in my Cummins engine in my pickup. Exhaust soot goes up a LOT when running used diesel engine oil (Rotella T from a truck shop) although I do indeed like the exhaust smell. It is amazing what changes a small amount will do.

I run with the compression changeover valves screwed in.

What compression ratio does that give you?

I would suppose running with them out would giver much more smoke?

I can see how someone could spend $10K blueprinting this engine to BMW or Mercedes specs, but why? Big, heavy and slow doesn't need tolerances to the nearest .000001"

Having experience as a machinist and also being a tad OCD, I have to force myself to not make some things/ parts "better".
If I really wanted to go nuts, I could build my Metro to the same tolerances I used to build customer's circle track racing engines to, but I would accomplish nothing.

I heard an old saying referring to Russian aircraft designers/manufacturers....their philosophy is:
"Perfection is the enemy of 'good enough' "!

The ones that I have used in the past were pulse position type.

No, not the servos (Futaba, Airtronics, et al...) that control steering and speed, the actual electric motor used for propulsion

any 6-24 volt tach/generator (small PM motor) can be used for the speed sensor

I think a ball-bearing radio control car motor would be great to use (some are very high quality) but am having trouble envisioning how to drive it?

Offset Idlers  = $58.00ea (.035"-.045" offsets available)

So you just rotate it so the eccentric takes up the excess backlash, then lock it down?
