Just wondering here, has anyone ever ran 100% alcohol in a smaller gas engine?  In particular, an Onan.  I have had this genset for years, and would really like to try it out on "shine"....  Its a 1971 4Kw out of an old winnebago. It runs like a top on gasoline, and even 10%  ethanol blend, but 100% alcohol, never tried it.   

Any suggestions or ideas on what to do to make it run properly? mixture settings, spark advance/retard, power increse/decrease?    Getting sick and tired of these damned 200 dollar electric bills, and i cannot afford a listeroid genset right now, (cant afford not to have it either! )  So I would really like to get this unit up and running on alcohol if possible, would really help out on the electric bill!!!!!

Well, blew out the head gasket the other night (what do you expect from a 89 year old engine!)  Made a new gasket at work, and while i was at it, made a new gasket for the ignitor. Both out of copper.  Should help with thermal conductivity to the waer hopper and keep the head a little cooler, it is not water cooled at all!

Got it fired up and running great again, this old engine probably never saw ANY serious work in its life till now, compression is excellent.

Gave it another test run this evening.Hooked up another dischargeed battery.  Even better results this time.....56 amps @ 14.4 volts!!!!!!!   that pretty much maxed out the capabilities of this engine!!!!   So, what i also aquired ws a 10 ohm 6 amp potentiometer, will wire it into the positve lead from the regulator to the alternator and dial  it in so the engine runs more at 375-400 rpm, instead of about 275-300 rpm at the 56 amp load.

Ken had a good idea, Alcohol...... I think once i get the engine/alt. performance where I want it, i wil experiment with runnin the ol gal on alcohol or alcohol/gas mix....Gives me an excuse to get that still up and runnin, for fuel use only mind you! ::) :D

tonight/this evening......I fabricated a dodge alternator mount, and installed the alternator onto my 1917 Fuller and Johnson 1.5 HP hit and miss engine.

Here are some rough measurements on the run.

Average RPM.......375
average output......48 amps@12voltsDC
fuel usage....1 quart @ 2 hours run time

It aint diesel, but damn, this is looking good!



I am going to do more accurate testing next week.  If this is doing what i think it is doing, i will be VERY happy!

keep this in mind...........a discharged capacitor shows a DEAD SHORT to whatever you hook it up too when it is in a discharged state!  it takes a few milliseconds for the cap to charge, during this time, extreme currents are involved and sparks will fly!

Use a suitable resistior in series with the cap to limit its chage rate and prevent excess current draw. 

A simple 1 farad 12 volt cap will blow holes in the lid of a copenhagen chewin tabbaco can, pretty cool too watch, and do, but not good for equipment....

I have used the grease gun method on 4 engines.  First they were soaked in PB Blaster, then pumpmed full of grease.  Every time the result was success.  Not once was excessive pressure applied to the handle of the grease gun.  Done 2 maytags , one McCormick deering, and a John Deere B this way.   If you go this route, and you find that you are puting ALOT of force into the lever of the grease gun to get it to break free, maybe look into putting a pressure gauge on the output of the grease gun, then doing the correct math, you will know the tonnage you are applying.  Also, a little pecking with a copper/brass hammer on the outside of the cylinder helps.

Lots of good advice here!    This is more of an experiment than anything, so if it works, great! If not, no big deal.

The carburator is an integral part of the cast iron head, which is not water cooled.  The main jet is fully adjustable and should not be an issue.  I guess all that remains is the ignition system, its an old Wico, makes one helluva spark!  I may look into making an iginition coil and a set of point from some other critter.  I have used a hand wound coil on an old 1917 fuller and johnson for years and its got a VERY HOT spark.

Hi all!  First post here...

I have always been interested in old school technology, my shop and the antique engines and tractor show it!

There is one thing that I am curious about, Has anyone ever converted an old gasoline stationary engine over to run on diesel (or similiar fuels) ?

I have an old 1927 ish McCormick deering 1.5 HP that is in bad need of a rebuild.  And being how this engine is pretty much rock solid, i was wondering if anyone has attemted to run a low grade fuel through such a critter?  Mot looking to install an injector pump or anything like that, just run it on diesel....


any thoughts on this??????
