Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: ST3 genny overheated, fuel in CC
« on: September 07, 2023, 07:46:40 PM »
SOLVED (partially)

Well, I opened her up some, took the side panel off the engine and inspected the injector fittings and banjo bolts. No obvious fuel leakage there. Cranked her up and VOILA! she started! So far, so good. No fuel leakage showed up during running either. didn't run it for any more than 15 sec.
Next, I pulled the mechanical fuel lift pump, reinstalled the hard line and actuated it manually.... fuel ran out of the rocker arm port like crazy!

So I found the source of oil dilution, now I think I will just delete the OE mechanical fuel pump and run a common outboard electric lift pump.

My rule is: When restoring old equipment for practicality, always look for opportunities to improve on what was originally the standard; this isn't a show piece.

Now to assess the engine post-failure.... need to see how to do a compression test on one of these?

Original Lister Cs Engines / ST3 genny overheated, fuel in CC
« on: September 06, 2023, 05:44:15 PM »
Hello all you wonderful Lister gurus!

Regarding my 1976 Lister ST3/Kohler 12Kw enclosed trailer-mount gen unit.
Our local PoCo was out replacing a pole yesterday so I fired up the ol' genny and ran the house during the work.
Started fine, ran smooth, never even winked at the load, so I went about doing my thing. After about 2-2.5 hrs, it shut down! Overheat switch closed and opened the safety relay. Engine was REALLY hot! This morning, I checked the oil and found it to be WAAAAYYY overfilled and diluted with fuel. When it failed, it was a cool day and the load on the system was very light.

Not sure where to begin diagnosing, is there anything I should be looking at? I suspect possibly the mechanical fuel pump may be a source of the dilution, and I hope I didn't smoke the cylinders with the poor lube!! Tried starting it after a couple hours of cool down, but it wouldn't crank, tried to, moved some. This model uses the gen as the starter, it tripped the Klixon overload protector!

Thanks in advance, as I know there will be lot's of good advice coming my way, y'all ROCK out there!!

Hey Peter, looks like you have a very similar gen as I do! I'm in Cali too, mt ST3 is same year but 74th unit built.
Gen head is a Kohler, it's a retired ATT trailer-mount unit.

So many questions: ???
How are you liking it these days?
Did you get the noise tamed?
Has Newsome been knocking at your door?   :police: ;D

Mine just decided to misbehave, overheated while running during a PGE equipment repair, found the crankcase full of fuel! Soooo, I'm back on this great resource looking for answers....

Generators / Another bonded neutral question
« on: December 12, 2022, 07:30:39 PM »
Hello folks! Merry Christmas to all!!

I have a question on my new Kohler 12RMO gen head. As received, it has a bonded neutral, so it would be appropriate to wire as a "Separately Derived System", meaning that the Neutral would need to be bonded at the generator AND the generator would require its own Equipment Grounding Electrode system. This is a les than ideal option for me.

This gen head is of the "Start-o-Matic family in that the gen head has the dynamo/starter windings included inside. Can/should those windings still be bonded to the case if I float the 120/240 neutral?

Has anyone out there un-bonded the neutral on their gen? If the Neutral is floating the system is now "Back-up power system and relies on the EGC system of the house/main panel. This would be more acceptable for my needs.

Thanks in advance!!

Generators / Mixing old and new tech

Good day all

Well I'm sorting through and correcting a few things with my new-to-me ST3/Kohler 12RMO61 (not sure if that is a zero or an "o").
The Emico ammeters and output are destroyed, the DC ammeter is fogged unreadable, and the off/auto/test switch looks to be corroded a bit.

Rather than try to restore these components, and to integrate better remote alarming/controls, I stumbled across this Chinese-made digital control console on eBay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/172944962087?hash=item284452b227:g:2yoAAOSwi8xZ72zx&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoIj5Az3%2FO%2FHixjpsp9KDukZ%2F4b03dQkgHgCvyDali372YdEzKVJoEBRktEIkxZzDCKBLQ1osSKA10jnfTZ5ZffkUyc1bm%2BUkN1VxpsrDZ%2FZr7SZf83n7FynD2wlqxSOifSczdOISexsKMScRrdz5wp74rv3irbllZDrVxr26c2mgHjiFU7MDefE7igmdvWC3Fqy6BPRXp2yGRDyLnn9nnVA%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_aCqveOYQ

There are several sellers with the same/similar units as well as one without utility power monitoring (search "DC60D gen controller).

Has anybody seen these or better, installed one?

What else would be a good option without ridiculous cost associated with it?

Thanks in advance!

Lister Based Generators / Re: Lister Start-O-Matic manual

Hey there, did you ever get this scanned?

I think it may be useful for my new/old toy TOOL!

So, apparently I am not getting how to get images to display inline with my text. Tried using the "Image" button and putting the filename in between the brackets, but that doesn't seem to work.
No biggie, I'm sure y'all can correctly associate the correct images with my text.

Good day all, and have a great weekend!!

Well, thanks in part to all the input I received here, and my penchant of old smokey things, on Wednesday, this thing followed me home!

I was impressed by how smooth and quiet it runs, and there is hardly ANY smoke from the pipe!! Compared to my Clarke backhoe with the Jimmy 3-53, this thing is putting out fresh air!!

Now I need to get my hands on any manuals, or other useful data on the engine and gen head - it's an interesting little unit, with some mods installed right from the start. Some of those are: a "built-in" load bank, which is a Q-Mark industrial electric heater, rated at 10000 watts, an electric priming pump inline before the mechanical one with a momentary switch installed, , and a Square-D 40A disconnect breaker just for safety!
Here are better pics of the ID plates:

And here is the Gen plate

And here is my favorite! This breaker makes me feel SO safe!!  :o
Yes, those are copper lugs, crimped down to fit into the plug-on leaves of the breaker - WOW!!

A little work ahead for me, but all-in all I think it's a good find!!

 ;D
Yes, the ABR-1 is more apropos. I just sold an Epiphone Al Caiola Standard with the ABR-1 on it - such a pretty guitar, hope it finds a very good home!

So it appears I have found the right group for solid information. I have not yet committed to buying this, but I do want to get a reliable genny for my home - being that I live in California, where utility power is provided at the whim of those who may have graduated with a C-.
The seller is asking north of $3K (USD) for this, and I think it is still a solid piece of equipment for that price, though it may raise some eyebrows of those who don't like certain kinds of smoke...

SOOOOOO, what say you about the price-point for this? Too much? Low enough to cause suspicion?

Also, this baby has a... well... baby muffler on it. That won't go over well with the WAF equation! Any suggestions for a good quiet muffler that wont destroy this en-"gem"?

Thanks again, love interacting with a good forum, y'all are awesome!! 8)

...with what I believe to be a Lister 3-cyl engine in it. Here are some pics.

Welcome aboard!

In the bottom corner of the 1st picture, there's a plate with the engine no on it... can you get a closeup of that? That will definitively ID the engine if it's a Lister - or definitively tell us it's NOT a lister!!

Cheers,

Ade.

Yes, I see that, and I can zoom in some, but the image quality is not the best. I tried searching what I thought I saw, with no joy... maybe y'all can discern more useful data from it!

The Gen is 75 miles away from me, so I cant go snap a better pic.  :(

i won't try to jade your educated opinions of what is written there with my myopic viewpoints.

12
Start-o-Matic, eh?  Is that anything like the Nashville Tune-o-Matic bridge found on some Gibson Electric Guitars?   ;D
The interesting thing about your input here is that I don't see a starter on this engine as I would expect to find. I see the battery cables go into the junction/control box on top of the gen head. Does this use the gen as a motor to start the engine?

13
Hello all you diesel smoke addicts! I hear this is a support group for such things!  ;D
New to the group and considering adding to my "Old smokey" collection. Currently running a Clarke BL17 Backhoe with a Jimmy 3-53, and now considering purchasing a Kohler Genny with what I believe to be a Lister 3-cyl engine in it. Here are some pics.

Wondering how loud these engines are, it is in an enclosure, but I know how loud some air-cooled engines can be.

Thanks and hello!
