Guys,

Good to hear that BruceM has put another Indian engine into slavery. That's what they're made for!

BTW The Godwin's pump that Guy Fawkes found on ebay looks very familliar.   

I have one of those in my back yard!  It was driven by a 16hp twin cylinder Lister CE (in the front yard - because it's too heavy to shift).

It used six V belts in parallel in the drive.

Guys,

I have been absent from this forum for a couple of months, mainly due to a change in my employment circumstances, - I am now very busy.

I was also contacted by the Commercial Director of Lister Petter in the UK, and politely asked to remove all references concerning Listeroid engines from my website, else face legal action. 

I complied, and to be on the safe side, took the whole site down, and put it back in a very reduced form.  Lister Petter UK still take a dim view of these unauthorised Indian engines - even 20 years after the last CS was made!

I have got my waste vegetable oil system working now, and I run my 1951 Lister CS 6hp on filtered WVO every day to heat my water.  I use a blowlamp on the high pressure line to warm the fuel for 2 minutes to allow the engine to start from cold on WVO.

Steve,

6mm microbore is very forgiving, it's like folding whipped eggs into a pudding. You just roll it off the reel onto the exhaust pipe and it stays put.

8mm is more of a pig  - 63mm (2.5") really is the minimum bend diameter.

Guys,

It's been a busy weekend here.

Yesterday we got a 1948 Startomatic to run as sweet as an old clock, after recutting the valve seats and some careful lapping of the new valves.

Today was spent on my pet project - my 1950 6hp Lister driving a 3kW ST head in a novel axial drive.  We are now making juice ;-)

There is an 80 tooth pulley on the engine shaft and a 32 tooth pulley on the alternator shaft.  They are connected using a Gates polyflex GT3 belt.   I also have a 34 toothe pulley so that I can experiment to get the best speed ratio to extract the most power from the 3kW ST head.

I had to free up the sticking governor, and try a few variations of governor spring/length, but now she runs well and holds reasonably constant frequency.

Lots of experimental work still to be one,  but I have just acquired a 14hp dynamometer  - formerly belonging to the Engineering Lab at Cambridge University. I'll  need a transit van to haul that one off campus.

Looks like its going to be a summer experimenting with waste veg oil and various heat exchangers.

Guys,

The ST is a generic Chinese alternator made by several factories.  The basic frame dimensions are very unlikely to change for the main castings. However the "dog house" that sits on top on rubber mountings  varies in size from different  manufacturers.

It can always be removed and replaced with safe western electrics and the rectifier mounted in a neat die-cat box. See Utterpower for one way of doing this.

Especially when we can also ship you a pair of CD engines, one a good runner and one for spares!

CD shares a few top end parts with CE.

IMHO the CE will probably only reach $750.

Guys,

Regarding a modification tothe compression change over valve, I have noticed some interesting behaviour on my 1950 Lister 5/1.

I start on high compression and then  slacken off the CCO valve as though I was going to change to low comp. ratio. The engine then forces out the central threaded rod of the CCO with some force as it fires and gas pressure pushes on the moveable valve.

I thought about using this sideways movement of about 1/8" and considerable force to initiate some sort of a valve that bleeds a little bit of the peak egine pressure into a compressed air tank.

The CCO has two holes which allow the escape of the compressed air, perhaps these could be exploited to feed air in through the CCO for an air start.

Speaking of starting aids, I have found a source of "thermostart" devices from China.  These are typically used on the Chinese small diesels and have a 12V heater coil and a fuel inlet.  After the current is turned on, the element glows red hot and opens the fuel valve by a bi-metallic expansion device. The fuel rushes in over the hot element and vapourises and burns in the incoming air.  So you draw a load of hot burning air and fuel into the engine, which is a "sure-fire" way of starting it in cold temperatures.

I will try and get pictures. These are dirt cheap from China, we got our alternator agent to ship 20 over included with the alternators.

I think you should continue to monitor the Lister engine activities on ebay UK for the next few days.

In amongst the rock fragments and mud there is another real gem coming up.

It's not a CS,  it's his twin cousin!

My plan is to ship initially to Houston.

If this is successful, a further shipment could be made to the west coast.

Alternatively, who here understands the costs of US road freight.   How much to haul  say 10 tons from Houston to Portland calling in at various points along the way?

They will only be sold as a pair.  The reserve price is $650 for the pair.

They will probably be put on ebay UK in the next few weeks,if they fail to sell privately.

These engines were often used by the UK telephone company (when it was part of our Post Office), as standby generators for Central officies.
