General Discussion / Re: Welding from a Listeroid/ST generator rig
« on: March 23, 2022, 02:00:50 AM »
It was unfortunate that all my pictures were lost when the photo host shut down this the reason for the vanishing posts here.  No pics equals rest of post worthless. That being said an enterprizing individual happened to save all of my rants so there is hope at some point they will be available with pictures.

I’m aware that this is a cold topic but since I haven’t seen anyone else offering this up I figured I would. Maybe someone has and I missed it.  In that case please disregard the following.

Some years back I collected a both 6/1 and 12/2 clones with intent to go through them and build a back up gen.  I thought at the time that I’d like to have a hard copy of 38ac’s Indian build thread to work from, so I saved it to a doc.  Now that the kids no longer require constant supervision I’m hoping to pick back up on these projects and was quite dismayed to find the content gone, and myself unable to locate the doc that I had saved!

Well, after a few days of searching usb drives I have finally just found it.

With permission from the original author I’d be happy to share, drop me a pm.  Better yet if there is a way for a moderator to restore the content to the WOK from the doc that would be better still.

I’m positive that I also saved the twin build, and others (possibly timing, and balancing) threads too but unfortunately I think those are now lost to me.  If anyone happens to have the twin thread content to share I’d be especially grateful.

Best,
Neal

Ok perfect,  that gives plenty of options for routing.  Thanks Hugh!

I'm anxious to see the cooling setup as well, but do you all think we can talk 38ac into some intake boost too?  I'm sure with this crew somebody has a small turbo kicking around the shop we could collectively donate to the cause ;)

Great explanation, thanks for walking us through the process.

When trying to bend the cast linkage components to adjust crossover rod alignment do you find heat to be helpful, or are the parts soft enough to simply work over in a vise?

And one further question - I'm sure this has been covered before but the threads on the intake and exhaust manifolds...  are they BSP?  And if yes is it close enough to NPT that it will work,  or should they be re-tapped to NPT for convenience?

Another awesome thread 38ac, really appreciate you taking the time.

I have a couple questions related to the twin governor linkage and balancing fuel delivery between the cylinders.

On my twin the entire governor assembly appears to be a mess - binding everywhere.   The long linkage rod is nicely bowed and rubs the block in two locations and manages to hit the oil line too.  I'm pretty confident that gentle persuasion is what is needed to align the parts all on the same plane but wanted to ask if you have any tips and tricks or gotchas to look out for in regards to these adjustments?  Your video about making the single linkage as rigid as possible was very helpful for the 6/1, and I'm sure it is just as important here but any other twin specific insight would be great too.

For balancing fuel delivery I have seen other threads using an IR thermo to check exhaust temps and make sure they are ballpark same, are there any better ways to check or is this still the preferred means?  How would they manage to get them properly sharing load across both cyls back in the day?

Many thanks

One vote for the 12-2 please, been procrastinating on tearing mine down for too long and could definitely use the push :)

Couple of $6 splitting wedges and some gros marteau work great too.

I took delivery of one of these twins and did the quick inspection before shrink wrapping it for later.  ...  All and all pleased with it but again, based upon a 30 minute inspection with only a bit a disassembly.

Does this mean we might see a detailed build thread for Indian twins?!!!    :D

I'll beg if necessary!

Generators / Re: Newb looking for some information about gen head
« on: July 29, 2017, 12:01:55 AM »
Call me dense but after staring at it I still don't really understand why there are 4 slip rings and 4 brush pairs on this unit if it only has two windings  :-\ Taking the armature out and taking a closer look might clear things up, but since it ain't currently broke I'm reluctant to mess with it too much.

It makes sense that a gen head with dedicated start windings would be set up with a commutator like a starter has.  I read today that any motor can be made to generate,  and that any generator can be made to motor in the right conditions...  would that be considered non-DC start as mentioned above?  I'm still curious if there is there some mechanical switching arrangement that could be used to do this too even with only two windings and a power source? I have seen something similar referenced in older threads, maybe I'm simply misunderstanding.

Again,  sorry if these questions are ignorant and for subjecting you to my learning - I'm definitely no EE!

After taking a closer look at the armature I see what looks four collections of wraps ( opposite poles) but I guess this is two complete windings.   The output of the DC brush assembly definitely grounds back to the G2 white lead and also connects to the field coils...  it doesn't look much like what I have been seeing in the ST docs but I believe you were right on Thob, thanks for helping me see what should have been a little more obvious!

Would be curious to see what a setup with extra start windings looks like if anyone has something to share.  Does it simply look like a 3 phase head?

Much appreciated!

Thanks Thob, I appreciate your input.   Guess I need to take the covers off and get some detailed photos...   Will attach as soon as I can.

Thanks for chronicling your projects Samo,  I'm curious to see how far you can take the instrumentation & automation.  Looking forward to the next installment!

Generators / Newb looking for some information about gen head
« on: July 26, 2017, 05:53:33 PM »
Greetings,  and apologies in advance if my questions have been previously addressed.  I have searched and researched but can't seem to clear up the bit of theory that I am apparently missing here.  Hoping someone will be willing to set me straight!

The project :
I'm collecting the pieces to build a 12/2 genset. In my possession are:
A 12/2 FieldMarshal fairly fresh from a crate awaiting teardown.
An 8kw Winco gen head with model #8ks4gc 3/a.

My questions are about the windings on the gen head and if/how they might be used creatively in this application.

On a typical ST head it looks like there are only two slip rings.

On this Winco there are four (AC1, AC2, AC3 to rectifier, and Q for DC).

Questions :

What are the DC slip rings used for in this model -excitation, etc?  I don't see any DC out capabilities in the factory config.  Could they be used to start the beast, or for charging maybe?

I know it's a good head and makes good power, have been PTO driving it during power outages for a few 14 hr runs with good results.   Since I'm in the planning stages I'd like to better understand what I've got an how best it might be used.   The only diag I can find is from Winco, and is attached.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have 2 s1100's  (same as a 195 except larger bore) and an 1115.
Ron.

Hi Ron,  not sure if you are offering them up or just passing along the observation.   Drop me a PM if local.  Thx

Counterbalancing makes a better engine overall...

dieselgman

Thank you Sir, makes sense.   Probably a case of diminishing returns and manufacturing to a price point why the smaller Chinese horizontals don't get counterbalancing.

Hello and welcome to the L.E.F.

Thanks 38ac!  Long time lurker, finally trying to put some of the information gleaned here to work. Looking at the recent instrumentation threads with great interest as well.

My reasoning for the 195 is based on what I've been reading up on the models and options - not practical experience.  What I'm finding suggests that the ones with counterbalance are easier to live with, and I believe that means at least a 195 or larger - but I'm certainly no authority.  Maybe you know if this is the case,  or have experience that counterbalance isn't that big of a deal?

As for IDI, just thinking that the option for fuel flexibility would be nice to have.   Again,  with no hands on experience maybe the DI models are just as good?  From reading it sounds like the IDI models may have a specific alpha character in the model number,  but that varies based on factory, date, etc.  They may also have a plugged port for a glow plug in the head but DI will not.  I probably wouldn't be able to tell if I saw one either.   Maybe someone will chime in to help clarify?
