I had a similar problem with my 12/2... it was a sticky pump plunger, polished the plunger and honed the bore.

Listeroid Engines / Re: How can I add a tachometer to my engine?
« on: February 15, 2011, 06:07:41 AM »
Hello to all, I use this unit ( http://store.qkits.com/moreinfo.cfm/MXA019 ) it's only a resolution of every 100 RPM but if you add 10 reflectors to the flywheel and cover the last digit on the display the readout hovers around the 650 mark. Speed is confirmed with a hand held photo electric unit. Final RPM / Hz. is tweaked with a Kill-A-Watt.
Works good enough for me. I can't remember but with the enclosure and shipping I believe it was less than $50.00 in 2007
It also can be programed for hi or lo RPM triggers. But if you don't have constant power to the unit the settings are lost.
 For what its worth:)

Engines / Re: Need starter and filter ideas
« on: December 15, 2010, 03:35:59 AM »
Haven't used the hand crank since I did this install. http://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=4299.msg52147#msg52147
I found it was simpler to mount the ring gear on the generator than the engine also it's easier on the starter with the added mechanical advantage of the belt drive reduction.
 Minimal fabrication easy install, cheap.

Thank-you for the offer Peter, once we start the tear-down we'll probably need the help.

General Discussion / Help Needed for Bamfords Diesel info.
« on: September 12, 2010, 09:49:25 PM »
Hello to all,

My brother recently bought a old gen set at a local fund raiser, its a two cylinder air cooled Bamsford diesel direct coupled to a 7.5 KW Sangamo generator.
Its partially seized (crank turns about 180 degrees).
I can't find any information about it.
I would like to find some information prior to tear down if possible.
Maybe some of the more seasoned members have some knowledge of these machines.

Westcoaster,
Where did you get the adapter plate or do you have plans to share?
I've got and 85 Samurai I'd like to put an old Jetta non turbo into, is it worth the trouble?

Somian,
I have tried the hanging weight, I found that it holds the RPM but hunts to much during load changes.
I would imagine that if the weight was immersed in thick oil or gel or somehow dampened RPM would be slow to change but accurate. Other concerns would be cable breakage, pulley seizing, outside interference falling onto snagging on the weight (runaway).
The best luck I've had is with this size of spring found at Home Depot.( 0.041" Dia. wire X 0.438"O.D. X  2.5" Long, plus eye at both ends with a total length of 3.2" Spring to be trimmed to length as necessary.
My governor response was increased greatly with some simple modes explained in a rar file I've uploaded to these two sites. ( http://www.badongo.com/file/8842449 or http://rapidshare.com/files/373321998/Governor.rar.html )
Also another mode that controls RPM changes under load is mounting a heavy flywheel on the generator shaft same as the Start O Matics. I mounted a 110 lb. flywheel to my unit to get rid of the flicker (worked great) and found that it helps to minimize RPM drop during loading or surging when load is dropped. Flywheel was a piece of 2" plate turned down to approximately 16" dia. bored to fit a Browning Q bushing, Its nice to have a machinist for a brother :)

Bottom line for me is to stick with a spring, Cheap, easy, simple.

Waste Vegetable Oil / Re: Looking for a centrifuge

Couple of pictures as promised.
The heater under the bucket is from a Mister Coffee percolator which heats the oil up nicely, also comes with its own silicone hoses and thermostat . If you can't find a junk one there only $19.95 at Wal-Mart.  ;D

It is a one pass system providing I clean the bowl regularly, I've had oil so badly contaminated with water/antifreeze etc. that when I check the bowl there's nothing but water inside so I have to reprocess the batch. Usually do 5 gallons about every 45 minutes to an  hour, I run the roid on wmo to run the centrifuge.
What is meant by "hpt" ?

Hello Fabricator,

With a shaft drive I can use whatever motor I come across and get the desired speed using different pulleys. I'm running my centrifuge at 4450 rpm. producing 1897 Gs. 3650 rpm. would produce 1276 Gs.

Hello Middle of Nowhere,

This setup only cost me $60.00 at the scrap yard for a 9" billet of aluminum and about $30.00 for bearings. The rest of the centrifuge is cobbled up from various bits of scrap.
My brother ( a machinist ) was kind enough to loan me his talent to machine the bowl and shaft.
The rest is just simple field fit fabrication. If interested I've documented what little information I have and share it in the hope that it may be of use to someone... it's not pretty but it works quite well, please no laughing.

You're not alone, I've seen it to, thought it may just be corrupt data in the text.
Doesn't bother me though, I'm just glad to see the site active again.
