Hi the cylinder head clearance is currently 0.027'' Manual says between 0.025'' & 0.028''  Plan to add another shim & see what happens if this dose not help have you any other suggestions as to what could be causing the problem

Many thanks
Steve

Thanks for your rapid reply. With the decompression lever disengaged it is possible to turn the engine over with slow loss of compression and no mechanical resistance. The problem is when i try to start it i increase the engine speed, as soon as i disengage the decompression lever it is physically impossible to carry on rotating the starting handle. through the compression stroke

The valves have been re-ground, new ring set fitted and new cylinder head gasket fitted and the timing set as per handbook. Would putting another shim under the cylinder head gasket to increase the cylinder head clearance,( bump clearance) be of any use,  At the moment it is set to the spec in the Manual

Thanks
Steve

Engines / Lister LR Starting problem
« on: May 28, 2016, 12:58:27 PM »
Hi
I have recently acquired a Lister LR1 750 rpm 1.5 bhp and I am having difficulty starting it. The engine turns over freely using a starting handle with the decompression lever engaged, but when I increase speed and disengage the decompresion lever to start the engine, the high compression causes the engine to suddenly stop rotating.

I have carried out the following tasks:
- Set inlet and exhaust valve clearences as per manual
- Cylinder head clearance (bump clearence) as per manual
- Fuel pump shims set as per manual

I would be greatful for any suggestions or ideas for the cause of this problem.

Thanks,

Steve

 HI
I have acquired  a Lister LR1 750 RPM Fixed speed On removing the Timing gear cover  i discovered that there were no springs on the governor weights  and the speeder spring was over stretched,  i did  unhook the spring before removing the Timing gear cover my question is Should springs be fitted to the governor weights and do i need to replace the stretched  speeder spring
Thanks

Hi
Just an uptate on my latest effort to start my Lister LR1
Removed timming  gear cover  to check timming gear  to see if timming was out  with both timming marks on crankshaft & camshaft gears   in line, the flywheel TDC mark was in line with the  timming mark on engine shroud both valves were closed on compression stroke the camshaft has not been removed since last time the engine ran getting realy frustrated now cannot think of any thing else to check  any further suggestions greatfully recived

Thanks

Hi
Still no luck starting Lister LR1 checked and set the following
1 /Rotation correct
2/Valve clearance set as per hand book on TDC on compression stroke
3/Cylinder head clearance checked ok
4 /New top end gaskets/ seals  all replaced
5/ Valves reground no leaks
6/ Fuel system bled
7/ New ring fitted end gap ok
On turning engine over placed hand over inlet manifold very little suction  placed hand over exhaust manifold  i get strong suction   & blow out, Tried rotating engine  opposite direction  and get the same result both valves are free not sticking inlet manifold is clear of obstructions
any suggestions greatfully received

Thanks for your sugestions reguarding non running lister LR 1 i would like to comfirm the following

1/ Engine rotation engine is standard revolution crankshaft turns clockwise  flywheel also turns clockwise (engine cowl correct) i saw the being  engine started a few years ago

2/ Excess fuel lever rotated anticlockwise pulled out then located under pawl

3/ checked fuel pump shims reading 36 thou not tried oil in cylinder yet

4/ New rings fitted  top ring end gap 20 thou/ compression rings 12 thou/ old Oil control rings rings 40 thou

With new rings fitted the compression still seems low   Tappet clerance set on TDC as per instruction book valves have been re ground an do not leak and a new injector gasket and cylinder head gasket and shims have been fitted will try oil down inlet manifold this weekend to see if this helps
many thanks for all your sugestions
