Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Power Inverters
« on: August 16, 2015, 01:42:52 PM »
I have been using smaller inverters for years, they are best for light loads and intermittent service. I have an outside water tube boiler and my biggest fear is power loss and the copper tube overheating. During the heating season I have a holding relay that stays open as long as theirs power. If the power goes off it makes a solenoid that powers up an inverter and runs the circulator. This buys me time to fire up the old Lister for long outages. When the power comes back on it automatically switches back and shuts down the inverter. Frank C.

I have several gov. gennys  all gasoline the big one is four cyl. 110/220v single or three phase runs nice but goes through fuel like an old big block dragster. The small ones are rated for 12 amp and are handy for remoate tool use. You must be carefull with the small ones some were 28v. ,pulled the engine off one of those for my log splitter. The shielded spark plugs are expensive and hard to find unless your near the military. Be aware big diesel gensets can be found reasonable ,in fact, cheaper than small units from hospitals and municipal buildings. When they build a new facility they rarely use the old genny and their too big for joe homeowner. Frank C.

Listeroid Engines / Re: 7.5kw ST Head Stopped Producing Electricity

I noticed last time I exersized my 10kw ST that it took a few seconds to build up voltage. Is that a sign that the residual magnetism in the core was week.?? Thanks Frank C.

Found an old piece of radiator hose that's a perfect fit over the ST-1 shaft, easy to pull off if I want to handcrank. I run an old cement mixer with tractor PTO and long shaft. When I'am using it I take an old towel and let the shaft snatch it, sort of disarming it. If you get next to the shaft you can feel the end of the towel slapping your leg. Frank C.

Bon ami has been in the back of my mind, it was once recommended by Cat. to seat rings and break cyl. glaze. Have any of you guys done it.?? In the mean time before I find some bio diesel I put some seafoam in through the intake primer to help free the rings. Hope springs eternal. Frank C.

Thanks guys, this engine came off a barge in boston harbor used to run a 12v gen for safety lighting and I have a hunch it has always run lightly loaded. The guy I bought it from said it was run very little. It is now coupled to a 10 kw generator, when I test run I use a 1500 watt electric heater for a load which is nowhere near enough load as you can't detect any change in engine pitch when plugged in.  38AC I really haven't noticed the injector creaking will have to listen next time. Any majic snake oil that would help (as if I don't know the answer). Frank C.

I have a Lister ST-1 that seems to have decent compression and starts easily. Is it usual to see some light blue smoke when warm running. In other words do any of the older Listers burn clean and smokeless. Frank C.

Has anyone here ether had a keyed crank grab their pant leg or heard of someone that did. I may find a piece of hose or something else to push over the exposed shaft on my ST-1 now that I use an electric starter. Frank C.

Generators / Fairbanks-ward USA generator
« on: November 02, 2013, 01:11:52 AM »
Cleaning up my uncles estate I brought home a FM-ward genny with a 8hp Tecumseh gas engine. Four thousand watts 120/240 33.3/16.6 amp @ 3600 rpm.Does anyone know are these a decent generator. The generator head looks like a Winco ,with provisions to motorize the gen. to start it. I'am not that fond of Tecumseh engines but the unit was hardly ever used. Haven't had a chance to start it yet it was stored dry. Frank C.

Been a long time working and waiting on my auxiliary power Lister ST-1, aircooled engine direct coupled to a ST-10 genny.Electrician just installed a new breaker box with generator lockout. My old buddy made me up a starter for $50.00.I can run lights, refrigeration and some appliances with a manageable load on the Lister.TV works fine no flicker or noticeable problems.I'am a happy camper with the whole system, much better than the 3600 rpm screamer I've been using. My main reason for Lister backup power is my outside wood furnace. It is a water tube boiler of my own manufacture and will tend to overheat if I loose the two circulators.I have a battery inverter backup that buys me a couple of hours but for long outages I need a genny.Of course in the summer refrigeration is the primary use. The Chinese build what their customers are willing to pay for. What grabs me is they go 90% of the way to a real good product then fumble on the fit and finish, little nickel and dime items. Frank C.
