Lister Based Generators / Re: Belt part number and source
« on: October 19, 2006, 10:23:38 PM »
Due to my setup I need an 8-rib belt ideally with 105". The local bearing/pulley place can only get me a Jason belt that is either 99" or 106.5". Neither really suits me too well.

Two questions:
How much do these belts stretch over time?

Are there any online dealers that have different brands (Optibelt/Continental) that maybe have different length than the Jason brand?

Tugger, I'm interested in your gantry crane. I assume you can lift the engine with this as well. I want to built something like this. I actually need to, or I won't be able to move my engine off the trailer. Can't believe how heave these twins are.
What profile did you use for the top cross bar?

General Discussion / Re: Honda with ST Head Questions
« on: July 20, 2006, 12:06:25 AM »
Thanks for the reply. I looked at the performance curve for the Hondas and see the problem with reducing the RPM.
Just thought it would have been nice to reduce the RPM for noise and less stress/heat on the engine.

General Discussion / Honda with ST Head Questions
« on: July 18, 2006, 11:16:59 PM »
I'd like to know what the folks here think what would be the best way to couple a Honda engine to a ST Head.
I will have several ST sizes between 5.5 kW and 10 kW by the weekend using one 7.5 kW for the 12/2 Listeroid project.

Would a 13 HP GX390 be strong enough for a belt driven solution for the 5.5 kW or maybe even the 7.5 kW?

Is it possible to reduce the speed on a GX 620 to 1800 RPM to drive the head with a spider coupling? Or would the torque/engine performance suffer too much?

General Discussion / Re: Canadian Customs Codes?
« on: July 14, 2006, 07:44:47 PM »
Think I found online what I was looking for.
8408.90.00 for the Listeroids and
8501.61.10 00 for the alternators

the Customs Tariff website is at: http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/general/publications/tariff2006/01-99/tblmod-1-e.html

General Discussion / Canadian Customs Codes?

I would appreciate if someone who has already imported a Listeroid and/or ST Head, could post the Canadian Customs Tariff Code for 'Stationary Diesel Engines' and 'ST Heads or Alternators'.

Lister Based Generators / Sources for generator heads?

I'd like to see a listing of all the suppliers/manufacturers of generator heads shipping to/from Canada and the U.S..

Lister Based Generators / Re: ST Generator Dimensions
« on: April 14, 2006, 12:56:56 AM »
Guys,

The ST is a generic Chinese alternator made by several factories.  The basic frame dimensions are very unlikely to change for the main castings. However the "dog house" that sits on top on rubber mountings  varies in size from different  manufacturers.

Ken

Any opinion on who has the best quality heads?
What needs to be considered?

I intend to use ribbed belts as well if I can find the pulleys. Just personal preference.
Optibelt has a selection that may work for some applications. I just don't know yet if they are available in Canada or the U.S..
I know their belts are excellent, together with the Continental brand.

Their complete .pdf catalog is here: http://www.gummi-jaeger.de/de/download/Antriebstechnik.pdf (large PDF)

They have adjustable motor (head) mounts as well. (pictures and drawings, if you need ideas how to build yourself)

General Discussion / Re: 3600RPM Generator Failure
« on: April 09, 2006, 04:00:41 AM »
You guys crack me up!

The starter housing says F420. A sticker on the front panel of the frame says DEK6000CLE I guess I associated it with DEK because that's what popped up when I googled for F420.
The AC head is marked KT-6.5.
Your prices are fine. Right now I just have to keep my money together to get the Lister project going.  ;)
If you look real close you see that the head and piston have matching marks. I figured some debris got in there that caused that, but a neighbor offered the opinion that this can happen if water gets injected. ???
Here are the genset pix: http://www.tatteredflag.ca/Yukon2006.04.08/index.html
It was actually a pretty nice looking set before the big bang.

Ahem, this sounds dang familiar to me. The picture looks almost like to ones I took from our exploded China Diesel.
Same parts broke.
Here too, the engine just continued to run until my scared 13 year-old shut it off. By then the gen shed was full off smoke and covered in oil.
Here are the pix: http://www.tatteredflag.ca/Yukon2006.03.14/index.html
I have parts available. ;D
I tried to find a Honda to replace the broken engine, but the size of the taper on the AC head still confuses me.
There are several of these heads on eBay. Wonder if they all come from broken engines.

Lister Based Generators / Re: Lister & Genhead are on the way
« on: March 31, 2006, 04:24:54 AM »
Congrats Steve!
Paid for my 12/2 - 650 RPM Powerline last Monday. Took the teller two hours.  ::)
Hope it works out.
As for a head I have no ideas yet, other than I'd prefer a brushless head in the 7KW range.

Thanks Steve, some good points.
I'm going to couple a regular shaft engine with a jaw/spider coupling to a gen head that will be converted from one to two bearings. I intend to bolt the engine and head to a subframe and then dampen towards the main frame. I'll make sure the electrical panel goes either on the wall or main frame with some shock mounts. This will be a standby unit only, while I'm getting into the 12/2 project.

I'm still trying to find an answer for the question I had asked regarding portable generators.

I have had several generators with small 3600 RPM engines. All mounted with rubber engine mounts. My firepump has no mounts between the frame and engine, but some more or less effective rubber feet under the frame. So why can't the engine and generator head be bolted down solid to a frame and then dampened with shock mounts towards the ground or a base?
What are the separate rubber shock mounts under the engine and the far side of the head preventing in a direct coupled high RPM generator application?

Listeroid Engines / Re: 12/2-650 RPM or 12/1-1000 RPM
« on: March 20, 2006, 06:18:48 PM »
All good answers!
I'd sure like to get a second one, but our budget is extremely tight these days. If it were not for the money, I wouldn't even think of importing one myself. I'm just starting to get an idea on the whole procedure. I am looking forward to Steve's report on his import.

Since I had planned to order from Anand the 14/1 - 850 RPM is not on their list, but it would be a good alternative.

Regarding noise I'm confident that it will be easier to quiet them down compared to the 3600 RPM gas and diesel engines we were using in the past. I've tried a few mufflers on them, but depending on wind conditions, the noise of the engine turning, was heard farther than the sound of the muffler.
