General Discussion / Re: Importing Lister Engine
« on: October 11, 2012, 07:33:42 PM »
Hello,

This thread is very good information.....  http://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=5517.0

The serial number indicating date of manufacture prior to the EPA restrictions.

[/quote]If you dont mind me asking, what would be acceptable to US customs as to sufficient proof, that would demonstrate that the engine been imported, predates the EPA legislation.

Also could you provide a link to the relevant EPA documentation.

Thanks in advance of your assistance.

Hello MNbobcatt,

Welcome to the Forum.  I imported one from Leeds, UK to Atlanta, GA in 2009.  As long as you can prove the age of the engine and have the EPA documents you shouldn't have any issues.  This thread has good information...

http://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=5517.0

As far as shipping the engine, there are requirements, clean and use heat-treated wood for crating.  You can find a Freight-Forwarder to handle everything for you including customs clearance, which is typical.  Or, you are allowed to clear the engine through customs for yourself.  IF the engine is for personal use and is not for resale.  This will work if you can find a shipper who will work with you.  You will also need to be registered with the Customs and Border Protection Agency to act as your own clearing agent (person).

My opinion is if you choose to try importing one, just assume it is all at-risk.  There could be snags I am not aware of.

....I didn't afford all the niceties....

Flat washers, hard, fine threaded bolts, and lots of penetrating oil.

Hey Joe,

Sounds like you are having fun....  Here are a couple pic's of the markings on a flywheel as I found them, and keyway alignment.  Hope it helps.

I have some completed pictures coming soon, but first I thought I would post some "Before" pictures.....  This is what I found when opening up the engine.  Looks like it had been sitting for some time...

I am having a cylinder sleeve replaced in an original lister block.  You can see from the pictures that they cylinder had been full of water (and Ice).  The sleeve and cylinder have some pretty large vertical cracks, not sure how the new sleeve is going to work out, but I am going to give it a try.  The new replacement sleeve is manufactured by Melling of Maquoketa, Iowa.

Mike,

It was good meeting you and all the other fine folks at the auction in Arthur, IL.  I am sorry that I came across as negative to your plans to import a contaner shipment of original Listers to the US.  My reaction was rather one of caution, concern and common sense.  I am not an expert so anything I say should be taken as my opinion.  My concern is that buyers are sending monies to a foreign country which puts their money at risk with very little recourse, hence buyer beware.  Nothing intended personally to buyers sellers or yourself.

Other concerns are that if the seller is creating individual bill of sales for each engine and buyer.  The buyer will be considered Importer of Record and each buyer needs to be registered with the US Customs and Border Protection before they are loaded for shipment.  Once the engines arrive in the US who is going to be acting as Customs Broker and are they going to be providing the Surety Bond?

Finally, I would suggest that you use tarrif code 8408.90.1040 if possible because there is no duty to pay customs.  I wish you the best of luck and agree that this could make a group of people very happy to own an original Lister.  Although I still don't understand your motivation....

So what are we talking to have one of these  listers  in good shape shiped over here .......ball park price ?
cs. price ?   container price ?  extras price?

I can't speak for the shipment being planned here, but I can provide actual prices when I had the CS and winch shipped in July 2010 from Leeds, UK.  The Lister CS and winch combined weight 1,600Lbs.
CS price $650 USD  Shipping to Atlanta, GA $568 USD.  Extras...  Parts to get CS running...

"Buyer Beware"

I couldn't get any history from the seller, but my best guess is that it had been used for some type of construction.  It had concrete spilled on it in a number of places and so many layers of paint that I can only assume that every slow day on the job the Lister got a new coat of paint...??

I've added a couple more pictures to my Lister gallery (TGEMilwaukee) after I removed the shields.  I will try to get more posted soon as I stripped it for repair.  I almost have everything cleaned and ready for assembly, the crankshaft goes in this week hopefully.

Getting the engine here is a very long story.  Normally you would hire a freight forwarder to handle the shipping, logistics and customs clearance.  I decided to handle this myself to save some money.  All I can say is that it took months...  Luckily I had some very helpful and understanding freight handlers who helped me out greatly after they realized what I was trying to do.  In the end I had to personally clear the engine through customs and prepare the EPA declarations, security filings, registration with CBP Customs and Border Protection, etc.. etc..etc...

I do plan on using the engine with winch.  Originally I was going to just use the engine to charge batteries, but after getting it here I think it's such a cool piece with the winch I will probably just add a PTO for the alternator and leave it complete with winch.

Had a great visit on my trip through IL.  Thanks for the hospitality and the chance to see an original 6-1 "running" live and in person.  Hopefully mine will be the second that I get see running...??

Thanks again for the chance to see your Lister collection and that incredible shop....  Really enjoyed the day.

Well it's finally arrived and I can officially join the club.

Just wanted to introduce myself to the forum and post a couple pictures of my Lister that's fresh off the boat here in Georgia (by way of rail or truck I guess).  Been lurking here for a while enjoying the discussions and feeding my fever.

Look forward to asking questions and sharing a few more photos and stories.....
