Engines / Re: Lister TS3 crankshaft oil way blanking plug
« on: January 22, 2015, 09:31:17 PM »
Hi Diesel
thanks for that, but I found the pop rivet was the normal thing Lister  used, which seems a  bit odd , fixed it with a tapered steel plug

Engines / Lister TS3 crankshaft oil way blanking plug
« on: January 22, 2015, 12:02:43 AM »
Hi All
Just been working on a TS3 Lister Crankshaft, it had what looked like a pop rivet half out ( or half in) for the oil gallery plug, I thought that's not right, so I tried to move it (with my fingers) and was it loose, the crank is still in the engine, but I have no idea what type they use, are they screw in plugs or blanks knocked in and where do I get them, any ideas?

Engines / DB stanadyne injector pump on a 3 cylinder engine problems
« on: December 12, 2014, 10:57:59 AM »
Hi All
Ok it's not a Lister but don't anywhere else to look
I 'm working one this 1550rev   fixed speed  3 cylinder Perkins 3.52 w/ a DB Stynadyne injector pump, started instantly and ran fine, I slowed it down to about 1000 revs to check out a bit better when I was doing that if felt a bit rough on the spindle and the revs seemed a bit off, but when I put it back to where it was  the revs seem a bit lower and stop solinoid ( only has electric inside no manual stop,) will not shut the engine off, I looked inside the pump and it all look OK, anyone got any ideas on this or another forum to check it out
Thanks a lot Barry

Engines / Re: low hours LISTER HR4 PROBLEMS
« on: April 18, 2014, 07:10:32 AM »
Hi Schwen
Thanks for the imput, The chrome rings were in "non liner" parent metal cast- iron cylinders, The smoke was white (ish)  indicating loss of compression, I did take the rings to another Lister specialist, and his opinion was dirt in bores caused it, ( I didn't know about the liners condition at the time.

Engines / low hours LISTER HR4 PROBLEMS
« on: April 18, 2014, 04:26:21 AM »
Hi all
Just stripped a fully recon'ed by the local Lister specialists a  Lister HR4 with very low hours ( maybe test hours no work?) which was smoking on two cylinders, the top piston ring  on one had worn the chrome off the ring and I could see where the chrome had worn in a gap and was blowing through, all the other  the top rings had worn the chrome also, the rest of the rings were perfect, the pistons and ring were the  a /market brand AE normally a good product. I decided to fit a full set of genuine Lister rings, when deciding to hone the cylinders, on  checking with a torch I found  only one cylinder was normal ( but this had a worn chrome ring)  shiny but no hone marks, one cylinder ( not a smoking one) was not bedded in at all, I could see all the hone marks from top to bottom very clear, the other two were half bedded in, non had any scuff marks or signs of seizing, non of the top rings that had the chrome worn off had large gaps (only 20 thou) and the gaps on all the other rings were normal , it didn't look a rough hone job , I gave it another hone and now they all look OK and the same, and will be fitting the genuine new rings, any comments on this would be welcome

Engines / TL / TR engine pistons
« on: April 11, 2014, 01:45:16 AM »
Hi All
I have a few TL engines to rebuild, will TR pistons be any good (same bore) and whats the story about 3 and 4 ring pistons? when  3 ring piston used are the cylinder bore clearances reduced or are they just used in higher speed engines, any help would be great

Hi dieselman
Thanks for the quick reply, It's PC model of stamford, I can (I think) get 240 between w and U, is that what you mean, but what about Neutral?

Hi all
I have jusy reconverted the genset back to single phase, it's a 12 wire double delta, three wire  240 volt s/p outputs N neutral U an W , but can only get 120 volts from N to U or W, the basic diagram is two triangles (delta) with n in the middle ( linking them) and u and W at either end, so I've 12o volts at either end so where does the 240 volts come from?
