Original Lister Cs Engines / some problems....
« on: April 03, 2009, 02:02:33 AM »
Hello All,

After a few hours of running my HA 2 is now having a few issues.
First off, it is only running on one cylinder. By means of swapping the injectors, I have determined that the injectors are fine.
The injector pump of the non running cylinder seems to be fine as fuel shoots out when no injector and pipe is hooked up, having said this, I do not know if the pressure is ok.
Also, I have bled at the injector, so I presume it can't be caused by an air lock.

The other issue that I can't seem to control is an air leak under the injector. I have cleaned the seating and put a new (copper) ring in but after a few minutes of running the smoke re-appears again and it is loosing compression. Looking at the ring and injector, the leak is each time on the same spot and it is between the ring and injector. Could this be due to inproper injector installation.

Thanks for any help
Henk

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Oil pressure in HA2

Ade,

The running parts were in remarkeble shape. The engine comes out of an old lifeboat. These engines usually run only once a month when the crew has a lifeboat drill.
Therefore, it was mostly cosmetics and some aluminum parts / covers and shrouts (between the cylinders) had to be replaced. Also the on the reversable gearbox some aluminum had to be welded up.
To be on the safe side I have replaced the piston rings and the main piston bearings. I had someone clean and check the the injectors, but also those were according to this guy in perfect shape. Also did I lap the valves.

The only thing that I don't seem to get working is the oil sump pump. I replaced the gasket / ring inside, but If i don't use it, it gets stuck. Also, when it is working it sucking more vacuum and hardly any oil is flowing....

Anyway, to me that is a minor issue.

I'm using 15W40 oil.
I was told that because of the colder climate, this should be used....

Original Lister Cs Engines / Oil pressure in HA2
« on: March 29, 2009, 04:31:11 PM »
Hello all,

after a year and a half of hard work, the chunck of rust that I was told was once a running HA2, is finally is running.
It is unfortunate that I can't attach the before and aft pictures, but many of my friends are very impressed with the result.
She has been completely apart and being an electronic guy, this was my first engine project.
Having said that, crancking that engine the first time was nerve wrecking. Remarkably, the engine started on the first cranck and is running beautifully.
The only concern I have is the oil pressure; when running in idle the pressure is about 35 to 40 PSI, however, when increasing RPM's, the pressure increases to 60 PSI. When she was appart I did check the pressure relieve valve which seems to be just fine.
I'm wondering if this is because the oil is cold and therefore still fairly thick (ambient temp is about 5 to 10 C (40 / 45F). Also, there is no load on the, so she doesn't really heat up that much.

Thanks for your input.

I just found a picture and information that matched my engine. It seems to be an model HA2.
Anyone reading this has some information on it.
Thanks
Henk

Hello Folks.

I just bought myself an old 30ft lifeboat with a Lister inside.
The problem is; I can't find the model number. (there is an plate on the flywheel cover but that is beyond readable)
At this moment all I can tell you that the boat was manufactured in '62 and I think the engine is original.
It is 2 cyl, air cooled.

I have been reading up and looking for a picture on the web, but I can't seem to find it.

It is dark now but tomorrow I will make a picture if that helps out.

Thanks for reading and any reply is appriciated.

Next goal... get her going.

Thanks
