Engines / Re: ph2w tickover
« on: March 25, 2009, 01:03:39 PM »
itching to have a go at the problem after recieving the reply to my problem so i dropped tools and headed for the boat.
Played around with the tension of the spring on the throttle rod and hey presto got the tickover rpm down to 600
So thanks very much Listerdiesel.
The tension on the spring must be factory set as there is no instructions in the manual. wolud be interesting to know the correct method of setting tension instead of trial and error.

Thanks for the reply, Both cylinders do die at the same time and yes there was a problem with one of the pump elements so it was replaced when i had the pumps serviced. I have to give it full throttle briefly when re starting.
I have not looked into the govenor side of things so thats the next job then. Its a 2000rpm motor and all the external springs look to be origional as they still had what looked like origional paint on them before i re-painted the engine. Another thing is that there are no instructions in the manual i have on how to set up these springs, one on the end of the pump rack (non adjustable)and one on the throttle rod (this one is tension adjustable).

Engines / ph2w tickover
« on: March 24, 2009, 09:08:38 AM »
Ran the engine yesterday ,getting ready for the new season. rigged up a cycle speedometer to measure rpm at tickover.
it ticks over at 950 rpm but still dies at around 920rpm, so still looking for advice on how to lower the rpm to about 600.
done everything i can think of including getting the pumps serviced, new nozzles in the injectors, double checked the spill timing (13/16" on pump rack at 28 degrees btdc), removed and cleaned heads and valves, has full compression. It starts and builds revs with no problems.
This one has got me stumped and am looking for any surgestions.

Petteroids / PH2W spill timing
« on: December 07, 2008, 09:45:10 AM »
Does anyone know the distance between the index mark on the injector pump rack and the injector pump body when timing a PH2W (2000 rpm). I have a manual that covers the ph2 air cooled which states the distance as 13/16 inch at 28 or 24 degrees BTDC when spill timing. Is the distance the same on a PH2W ?.
The problem is i cant seem to get the tickover rpm down low enough or what i think is low enough as i dont have means of measuring rpm. I have seen a video of one running at tickover and its running at a lower rpm than i can get mine to run.
Engine has recently been de coked, injectors seviced with new nozzles and pumps overhauled proffesionally.
It runs great except if you try and lower the rpm at tickover, as if the fuel is cut off too soon.
Thanks
Martin.

Gives me an idea of how mine should start. had problems recently with starting, turns out injector nozzles need replacing, so am awaiting parts.
Nice one Doug.

Engines / PH2W compression
« on: July 24, 2008, 10:28:07 PM »
Hi, does anyone know what preasure i should be looking for in a compression test on my ph2w. in psi if possible! as thats what the gauge is calibrated.
Turns out its around 300 psi, if anyones interested.

Thanks Tom, cleaned the nozzle and it ticks over lot better

Is your fuel tank above the injection pump? If not you might be leaking air into the system. Also is there a screen on the pickup in the tank? Could be plugged.
The tank is slightly below the pumps (fuel level higher than pumps when full), and is pumped to the injector pumps via a lift pump, no screen on the tank pick up but fuel travels through an auto spin on filter(new) then to the lift pump, then engine fuel filter and then the injector pumps.
the fuel flows freely and cant find any apparent air leaks but i will double check.
would air leak be more obvious at higher revs ?, the engine revs up fine.

So let me get this straight, you're are going to do your engine test at sea, with an engine that you already know to be unreliable.

Perhaps you should change your name to Jesus Christ, then if the miraculous engine refurbishment while running at sea fails to materialise you can do the miraculous walking on water (while carrying the entire crew) to get back to shore instead of drowning.

There is a legal definition for your planned activities (it is far more polite than my own definition) and that is "Criminal Negligence" and "Reckless Endangerment" (of the lifeboat crew)

i am not that f...... stupid, it will be run in the dock at the local boat yard before it heads to sea and it has an auxilliary engine if it fails so please can i have constructive advice and not abuse by people with a chip on thier shoulder.
The only problem is that it wont tickover for long but otherwise runs fine

hi, the engine was not tested fully before putting in the boat, it was just run briefly on the floor and not given a chance to tickover for any period of time. but there is excellent compression and the head bolts are tight, it has been standing for years before i had it, so maybe it needs a good workout before i make any adjustments, so that will have to be when the boat eventually hits the sea as i dont like running it hard whilst she is on the trailer.

Finally got to run my petter ph2w for the first time in the boat today (still on dry land!), the problem is that it takes a while to start then once its running it revs up fine but once you release the throttle it will tick over for about 10-15 seconds then the revs drop futher then it stalls. The only way to prevent this is to keep the revs up higher than the 600rpm it should tick over at. Any surjestions welcome.

Engines / Re: petter raw water cooling

Thanks for that, i would also have to run a dry exhaust or have a seperate pump to raw water cool the wet exhaust, the same if i was to fit an on board heat exchanger. so many different ways of doing things. not sure which way to run, the easiest being leave it raw water cooled !!

Can anyone tell me what a keel cooler involves, is it a tube that runs along the keel or a flat coil type arrangement sitting on the underside of the hull, can they be homemade, such as copper tube, what length of tube and diameter are there any formulas for working them out.

Boat is a long way from launching, started with a bare hull and i am slowly working my way  through it. engine is ready to fit. cash is the main problem, everything marine is as if you just add an extra zero !!

Finally found where the anodes are (thanks to Doug), they are zinc tubes mounted on brass plates in between the water inlet manifold and the block.
Mine were totally gone so i machined some out of zinc rod and soldered them to the origional brass plates.
