Engines / Re: Use of lye/caustic soda

Eadie,

First:  I hate net nannies or folks who think others don't have a lick of common sense and they admonish others to be careful with electricity as it can kill or with water as you could drown BUT, as I hope that you know, caustic soda is extremely dangerous.

I had a speck of it much tinier than a grain of sand blow into my eye and it ate a hole in it and I had to go to an opthamologist to get treated and it was extremely painful.  He said that it if had hit the cornea, I would have been blinded in that eye.  Took a long time to heal and pain was constant even with Rx analgesics.

btw, I haven't seen any bubbling at all.  Just stagnant.  I had to stir it.  It was very warm, as expected.

This is so simple and relaxed for a micro, that Laplace transforms are not needed.

I am not talking about a person programming it without programming and micro knowledge.  However, for an e.e., c.e., it would be duck soup, so to speak.

Joe  wvo

Holy Smoke call the media Bob and I agree on somethiong lol.

Yes I'm scared too fellow "Listers"

As far as algorithms and related laplace transforms to mathmaticly calculate the stability of a closed loop system two points. Somehting like the light duty PLC 984 compact from Modicon for example can do the task of a PID loop.

But its not easy to program for the average guy, and Yikes Laplace if you plan on doing it analog !!!!!!!

MobileBob,

That is where the microprocessor shines (tight loops or doing things quickly).

The algorithm would be a piece of cake for a microprocessor/controller.

The programmable interrupt priority hierarchy would be perfect for this.

It could detect a load/speed change before the mechanical governor even knows something is happening.

If I designed it, I would use priority interrupts.  The micro does nothing until a change.  No loop needed at all or, it could be doing other things until a change and then respond in millionths of a second or faster.

Joe wvo.

Joe:

that algorithm is going to get mighty complex the tighter the control is, and the broader the range of loads
and also the range of time factors among others.

i agree with Doug, i think a much more successful approach would be to blueprint the mechanical governor and get it
to work as well as possible,, then use the electronic governor to bias the mechanical governor.

using that approach the algoritm need not be complex at all, actually if you coded in some delay it could operate in a loop control
fairly well i would think

Doug,

That is the beauty and flexibility of the microprocessor and software.  An anti-hunting algorithm could easily be implemented.

Joe wvo

A bright idea, but I think it woul be better to stay away from closed loop controls and work with the mechanical govener rather than replace it.

The same actuator could be used to fine tune the mechanical system by increasing and decreasing a helper spring presure based on electrical load and not engine speed. We can live some frequency drop, the harder you try to make things rock steady the more difficult things become and more and more likely to hunt.

Are they any good?  If so, where are you located and would you sell them?

Thanks

Joe wvo

I have a couple of old generators I am thinking about scrapping.  Anyone have any idea (ball park)  how many pounds of  copper is in one.  a 6 kw and a 15 kw.  Thanks.

I don't yet have a Listeroid but have plenty of other diesels.

Joe wvo

you can heat it any way you want, but you are running a lister on free fuel. If that is too costly, how much are you expecting to spend?

I was mostly introducing you to the centrefuge. At 220 bucks it isn't a bad price compared to 500.

Thanks, RBODELL,

There is lots of good information in that link.  I don't want to buy a centrifuge, however, and the heaters would be costly to run.  I am in the country and I can use a fire-pit to heat the oil for boiling off of the water.

I am really wanting to build a centrifuge for processing my w.v.o. after being picked up.

Hotater has one but I THINK it is a unit for in-line processing or, in other words, while driving.

I would welcome collaborating with folks on building one.  I have a mill, lathe, tig, mig, stick, oxy/acet and alll sorts of stuff.  Does anyone have plans for a unit that would process a gallon or so at a time?

I could buy one for around $500.00 -  less, motor and mount but I am cheap.

Scott,

Are you planning to sell them?  If not and it is for your own use, are you releasing the plans?

I may can build the bowl with my mill and lathe.  Also, what material is the bowl made of?

Thanks

Joe wvo

Joe wvo

I have such plans for a centrifuge, designed to clean and dewater wvo and wmo. The CAD files have been sent out for bids to machine the centrifuge bowl.  If the centrifuge bowl can be machined at a reasonable cost I will move forward with the project.  I hope to know in about a week.

rpg,

You say that most of these engines are made by the same company....., do you know that for a fact or is it an assumption?  If you do know it as a fact, which company is doing the manufacturing?

Thanks

Joe wvoi

sanchez,
I can't offer any guidance specific to Basant Industries, however, based on lots of comments, you get what you pay for.  Most of these engines are all made by the same people, you are just dealing with a different marketer.  With some exceptions, few companies offer support if you find problems after receiving the engine.  That said, best of luck!

I tried, too, with my same name and I didn't measure up.

I just wanted to see what the site is about.  Does he not authorize folks if they are a member of this board?

What's the deal?

Joe wvo.

I tried to join Georges site, under a different name, and got an E-mail back say I did not meet their "requirements". LOL

JohnF,

I would be using free w.v.o. and filtering isn't much expense now.  My time is worth absolutely zero in monetary terms.

I would have immense fun in having Listeroid power and quite frankly, a running diesel is like a symphony to me. I can see where it would become annoying if run continuously.

We had a diesel boat with a diesel generator, my wife had a diesel caddy before someone stole it and I have a couple of diesel cars.

I would have to search my memory but I don't recall saying that I intend to go completely off-grid.  Maybe I did but I would certainly like to get rid of ~$400.00 electric bills!

I already have a small number of diesel generators but the noise, even at 1800 r.p.m.s is horrendous and I do not have them hooked up.

joe wvo

Joe;

From a personal, practical and empirical point of view, the ONLY way to even get NEAR to break-even when comparing off-grid to power company rates (at least where I am) is to use totally free fuel.  That's break-even, not save money.  With respect, you "suspect" - I "know" becaue I'm doing it.  Why am I off-grid?  I ask myself that a lot and the answer that always pops up is independence and freedom from power outages which can be common in my area.  It's a lifestyle that requires a terrific amount of dedication.  I will encourage people to go off-grid, but ONLY after they understand the implications.  Hoping and wishing just don't cut it at -30C.

If you want to believe otherwise, well, it's a free Country. You have my figures - and they do not include some items, take them as you will - or not.

Bob,

You read way too much in my post about giving us email addresses, etc.
I never insinuated that you were not telling the truth about a few folks having difficulties.

I am a direct-speaking person.  I really think that your posting the email addresses and searchable names of folks that had a problem or so, would be very helpful to the rest of us who are wanting to buy engines for sundry reasons.  As I said, it would help everyone to avoid the pitfalls made by others.

Would you be kind enough to do that for all of us?

Thanks

joe wvo.

Joe:

if you don't want to believe me, then check the back posts

not to pick on anyone and i am not dropping a name to cause problems
but there is a gentleman here on the board from the south east if i recall, his name is Scott

the was able to get some engines imported and got a letter from the epa
he posted later that he would not import anymore engines.
now he did not get fined, and to my knowledge did not get anything confiscated, but
the law clearly provides for the epa to do so. So i guess it depends on how lucky you feel,
how nice the epa is with you if you get caught, and if the stars are in alignment.. etc.

you might get lucky!

also Mike Montieth has posted all his trials and tribulations as an importer/seller of these engines
he has done so for many years,, and he has posted numerous links that support my claim that you
do so at your own peril.

personally i do not believe you are going to save a dime generating your own power, provided power
is available to your site,, however if you have to spend $20 k  to get power brought in then by all means
generate it yourself.

i have researched this self generation of power for the better part of 30 years, and agressively over the last
10 years,,, i have ran countless calculations and it is going to be nie on impossible to generate power for less than
what you can buy it from the grid, unless you have an endless supply of relatively clean and readily used fuel.

i am not trying to rain on your parade, but rather i am trying to interject a bit of reality.

as i see it there are sub groups of folks that work with lister/oids, changfa's etc

1. the true offgrid folks

2. the ongrid folks that need reliable power, because of frequent black/brown outs

3. the ongrid folks that need power in times of storms and hurricanes

4. the ongrid folks that just like to build stuff, experiment, and get their hands dirty

the offgrid folks (#1) are the most serious in my opinion, and carry the most weight with me
when it comes to getting accurate information as to true costs of operation, and cost per kwatt hr generated

the other 3 groups for the most part really don't get into the real costs to varying degree's

now then if you truely are going offgrid then study those that are offgrid, ask them the tough questions

if you fit the other three groups, you will never save a dime over purchased power save for very specific
instances, that being the following

1. you get free and easy to process fuel

2. the power company rates are over 25 cents a kwatt/hr

3. you value your time at less than minimum wage

4. you are very good at all things mechanical, electrical, and have good luck

5. have understanding neighbors and family members.

6. all the above

again, i am not trying to be a hard ass, and piss you off.

as another of our good friends used to state over and over again

"Do the math"
