Yes,  it spins freely by hand.

Well, one of my tappets turns occasionally, while the other spins like a top.  Do I need to be concerned?

I've done some work on my roid in the last week. I picked up one of those auto exhaust pieces which are semi flexible and welded threaded fittings on each end. That decouples the engine vibration from the weight of the exhaust system. It seems to work well.

I also had to replace the fuel line between the fuel filter and injector pump. The rubber in the crimp-on fittings was already half dissolved by the biodiesel and was leaking badly.

After that I was able to run it with about a 3000 watt load for about 45 minutes. In the beginning, it smoked badly. Towards the end it was hardly smoking at all. This was really the first real break-in run with a load.

I did notice that one of my tappets isn't turning. At least, the push rod isn't. I assume that means the tappet isn't either. Is that true? The other push rod rotates every time. What do I need to do to fix it?

Thx,

You said you have 2 battery banks. Why have the original alternator sharge the starting bank, and put a high output alternator to work charging the other? That way there's no worries about them banging heads.

Wow Shipchief! That would be great! How flexible is it though? Where are these things available? and most importantly....  How much are they?

Thanks.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'll try the JCW flex pipe. Gas tight is important as I do not want exhaust gases in my gen shed.

All the best.

It's for marine applications, but does not say that it is for 'wet' exhaust.
Thanks!

Hey Murph!  Sounds good. I just test fired the beast and it all checks out. I had to play with the governor to get 60 HZ. It was only making 55 Hz at first. I have 127 vac on each leg. I still have to sink that grounding rod but for now, everything is grounded to a mounting bolt on the ST5. Since the ST5 and 6/1 sit on the same steel rails, the 6/1 is grounded too.  Is that okay?

Thanks,
Quisp

Shipchief,   the governor was actually set too low, and it was still hopping up and down. I don't know what the rpm actually was, but when I finally got it all put together and connected to thye ST5, I was only making about 55 Hz. I had to bump it up a little to make 60 Hz. Yes, I can already see that I'll be doing some work on the governor. Sounds like you have a sweet setup!

Leland, the concrete does not touch the shed structure at all. It's close.... but it doesn't touch it. The bolts that go through the 6x6s and the 6/1 are 3' long, most of which is in the concrete. I also put nuts and washers on the bottom end. Those rods are NEVER coming out!

Thanks to all,
Quisp

Well here's an update.

My 6/1 is now mounted to the concrete block and runs great without transferring any vibrations to the shed it lives in. Here are a couple pics of the base. The concrete is about 3 ft deep.

Now I'm setting up the ST5 gen head. Thanks again.

Thanks for all the replies. I have one more question (for now), with regard to grounding.

I haven't run it yet, but here's what I have so far:
U5/U6 tied together
2 outlets wired with 12/2 (the wire, not the Listeroid) as follows:
black to U1, white to U5/U6
black to U2, white to U5/U6

As I understand it, this should produce +/- 120vac to each outlet.

I intend to sink a grounding rod and attach the ground wires to it. Should I also ground the ST5 case?

Thanks again.

Thanks Bob,   unless someone else comes up with something different, I'll just cap them off.

All the best.

Here's a link to a picture:

The 2 thinner wires hanging in the front are the ones I need help with.
Thanks,

Thanks Bob. I haven't done anything with them yet. I can't tell where they go without maybe taking off the front housing, which I have not done.

When I posted my Q I got an error and tried it again. Apparently, both of them worked. If an admin is reading this, please delete the other post. I tried and was not able to delete it.

I await more answers.  Thanks.

Generators / ST5 Wiring question
« on: August 30, 2009, 01:49:48 AM »
I'm setting up my ST5 on my 6/1. I'm handy and mechanically inclined... but electricity baffles me. :-[ There is no panel box on my ST5, just a cover where one might have been. When I open up the cover, I pull out 6 wires. There's U1 U2 U5 U6... I know what to do with them. There's also 2 other thinner wires that have no label. Can I safely assume these are grounds?

Thanks.
