Generators / Can ST 5 voltage be increased
« on: October 13, 2009, 12:12:36 AM »
Increasing voltage on ST5

At full 5K load and 59 cps voltage is just hovering 110. Suddenly Dropping the load sees the voltage to go up to 126 momentary and come back down to about 114 at 60 cycle. Max frequency change is from 58 at measured 6K load to a tad over 62 when the load is dropped. I was wondering about increasing the voltage slightly. Would a bit of capacitance across the field be a consideration.

Wish I knew the size wire on the two additional unused leads in the doghouse that show 5 volts AC. and wonder where they are located in relation to the Z Windings. It has been discussed what their purpose is but had the thought that their output could be used with a variable resistor to augment the z windings but they might not be heavy enough or in phase with them.

Maybe just a case of too much time on my hands, Lol! really wont be surprised if someone tells me "if it aint broke, dont fix it"!

Generators / Splicing cable
« on: August 24, 2009, 10:27:44 PM »
Would like to power a remote building and have a couple of pieces of #4 three wire plus ground totalling 200 ft. Will pull the cable through PVC poly tube. How about staggered, soldered western union splices vs crimped connectors. I would like to keep it as neat and bulge free as possible to minimize the size of the poly pipe.

Generators / Transfer Switch

How does the Generlink (Genersafe) meter base effectively isolate the generator from feeding the line? The literature seems to indicate generator output effects the disconnect, not merely the effect of plugging the cord in forcing a mechanical disconnect.

The device is a bit pricier than selective circuit disconnects but makes for a very flexible distribution to your household circuits. Also no inspection required which might be of interest to anyone who has had a few "under the radar" added circuits.

Engines / Electric start with a different twist!
« on: August 02, 2009, 07:32:39 PM »
Putting the pieces together to make an electric start for 10-1 as there is no way this old guy will start it in winter hand cranking. Also made up a new glow plug adapter for the changeover plug. Had to set it in a hole to get the protrusion I need with the same plug  used for my VW TDI. Waiting now for the two flange mount bearing assemblies and keyed hubs to mount ring gear and wheel.

I am going to use a trailer wheel for the friction drive and it will mount on a moveable pedestal that tilts for engagement. The ring gear goes on the other end to get proper rotation. Starter and ring gear from a GM V8. Should turn engine close to same speed as donor vehicle since the trailer wheel is 18" OD driving the 20" flywheel. Certainly a bulky setup but parking space is not an issue; nothing else going on that end of the engine mount but the starter assy. It can come off in seconds with two pins if need be.

General Discussion / New to the Forum
« on: January 02, 2009, 11:03:15 PM »
Have been reading up on the back posts and trying to get a feel of how things work. My intentions are to set up enough standby power to keep things going if we get an extended power outage. Freezer contents is the biggy since we are set up to heat and cook entirely on wood.

I have an ST5 set up on a 3 pt hitch frame and run it off the PTO via a serpentine belt with car tire for driver. That lets the old three cyl Case/Oliver tractor run about 1200 rpm but it is very much a clumsy setup;  not that easy to start in cold weather and sure isnt a "purty" piece of work. Will likely pick up a Listeroid and strip it down for a bit of spit and polish of the innards. I have quite an accumulation iron around and an old Voest lathe that will swing 22" in the gap so I will be able to play around with things a bit.

I see there is lots of info on cleaning up the AC waveform of the ST generators.

Thanks to Andrew for helping me fumble through my signup procedure for the forum.
