Engines / Rene' up and running.
« on: June 14, 2007, 05:25:03 PM »
Got laid off the other night so I had some time to assemble my 6/1. As I mentioned in another thread, I bought this from an old farmer in Alabama. It was in parts and had no ID. Every thing was there and packed with spares. He said he bought this engine to run his milking barn because the cows weren't frightened of the noise. He had one before this and it quit suddenly, so he needed to replace it, and did so with a Coleman, which scarred the cows. It took him so long to get this engine that he had an electrician connect the barn to the grid. When he retired he sold everything from the farm, then sold the farm.
She started on the 4th attempt of about 5 revolutions each try. Settled down to a nice steady 650 RPM after I fiddled with the governor. It was running a little fast at first. First run about 10 minutes to set the Gov. Shut down, cleaned magnet in the sump, and checked oil level.
Started again, 5 turns of the flywheel, dropped the exhaust vavle and lit off. I used a large compressor for a brake-in load and ran 6 HRS.
I itend to do a thorough check over today.

Lister Based Generators / Probably real dumb question!
« on: May 01, 2007, 05:44:50 PM »
I know this has been discussed before, but I couldn't remember the end result. Does any one on the Forum know of a "startable" generator head. I will explain this, as I don't think that is very clear. My old Ralph generator in the Ultravan has a starting system whereby the generator head itself has start windings in it. I need to repair / replace my GrandMoms generator and I need to do this without more re-configuring than absolutely necessary. Otherwise I will need to re-permit the installation, and Palm Beach County is very S    L    O    W    about things like this, and very picky about how they are done. Wisely so in general, but I would prefer a repair rather that a replacement. 7.5 to 12 KW, single bearing with internally tapered shaft is preferable. If nothing comes up, I can pull the head off Ralph, install his head at her house, then use that as an excuse to replace him, although I'd rather not.
BTW, I cannot quickly repair the original head because the retainer bolt snapped during a power outage Saturday causing the rotor to move away from the crankshaft. The rotor bearing on the "dead end" moved out of its bore and the rotor ate the pole shoes.
Thanks for the help again, Wayne.

Generators / A different combination: Deutz.
« on: April 19, 2007, 06:30:05 PM »
As I posted in another area, I have this honkin' big battery, and have decided to use a
Xantrex sine wave inverter stacked for 220 on 2 legs. 4 wire standard household current.
When I went to my engine distributors' warehouse i saw an F3M2011, 3 cylinder externally
oil cooled engine that was damaged in shipping. Very minor damage, and now it's mine.
I want to drive a 15 kw ST head through a double u-joint shaft similar to a tractor PTO.
Now here's the question: Has anyone on the forum tried a 6 pole head, and if so are there
any problems I can anticipate? This would allow me to turn at 1200, still be in the power
range and be quieter. If this hasn't been done I have alternate things to try, but I trully believe
in the KISS method.

Everything else / Big Battery for Inverter
« on: April 18, 2007, 06:24:46 AM »
I stopped at a freight salvage house this (tuesday) afternoon on the way home from Atlanta.
I found a Deka AGM battery intended for back-up use in cell sites.  285 AH and it could be
connected as anything from 2 volts to 48  since it has 24 individual cells. At over 700 Lbs.
this isn't something I'd want to move often. Certainly made my F250 ride better.
What I need to know is: If I had the choice of inverters, which I do for a nice change,
which ones to consider buying? Does anyone have opinions on specific brands? I
know Xantrex is rated highly, as are a couple others.
Any real experience to provide ammo for a choice?

Generators / Needed: small failed ST head.
« on: March 31, 2007, 08:08:10 PM »
If this should go in the Marketplace section, feel free to move / re-post it.
I'm looking for a small ST type head (st2 or 3 if possible) for an experimental unit.
Specifically I want a head with a FAILED rotor winding. Prefferably one which is deemed non-reairable.
Alternatively, end bells and center housing with stator windings will work, and I'll build a rotor from scratch.
One of the people I build aircraft starter units for wants to play with electricity.
Southeastern states if possible, Fl, Al, Ms, Ga, etc.
Any help at all will be appreciated.
Thanks, Wayne.

Engines / ceramic guides
« on: March 23, 2007, 05:53:59 AM »
A short time back someone, cujet i think, mentioned ceramic valve guides.
Does anyone know a vendor or supplier for a retail type purchase of the sort needed in a 6/1?
I have decided to begin the rebuild of my 6/1 and since the crank and rod / piston are being reworked first,
this gives me time to find parts for the next thing I will tackle, the head.

Engines / Oil cooling for Listeroids?
« on: March 12, 2007, 06:11:13 PM »
My latest generator project will use a 4 cylinder Deutz M2011 with turbocharging direct driving an ST head. This is an Oil cooled engine, using an oil to air heat exchanger. The reason for this post is to ask if anyone has used a similar system in one of the many Listeroids being run / experimented with by members of this forum? Perhaps an oil to water exchanger? This could allow for a more constant temperature, and quicker warm up, due to less mass initially heating and only valveing in enough water flow to stabilize the oil temp? This may have an added advantage of reducing the possibility of corrosion in the cooling system. Also, oil usually being thicker than water, maybe less chance of leakage, specially thru a porus gasket interface? Also with a greater heat storage capacity maybe running a little warmer than water would allow, better fuel consumption figures?  Just a random thought. If no-one else has tried, I might have to.
