Waste Motor Oil / WMO burners: How many KWH per gallon?

I'm just curious those of you that have burned WMO in your generators, approximately how many KWH are you generating from a gallon of fuel?

Engines / Yanmar engines?
« on: October 16, 2009, 07:36:43 AM »
I want to get a diesel engine to use for heat/power at my shop running on a mixture of WMO. I've always wanted a Lister clone, but a 6/1 is a little underpowered for me, and don't quite want to invest a couple grand into a bigger one yet.

I'm starting to look at this 2 cylinder 13.4hp Yanmar engine probably attached to a 6kw gen head.

I don't know anything about Yanmars or much about diesels, do you think that would make a good long term generator? Could I run it at half speed (1800 RPM) to direct drive the gen or does the diesel need to rev higher than that?

I expect Yanmars are good quality, and easy to find parts for in the US, right? How many hours might a peice of farm equipment rack up with a Yanmar engine before it's worn out?

Listeroid Engines / Can I run this many hours on waste oil?
« on: October 05, 2009, 12:14:06 PM »
I've always wanted a lister but never really had a need for one. Now I have a big shop with a roughly 1000kwh/$100/month electric bill and soon I'll be paying for heating. What I would love to do is get something like a 6/1, and build a 3kw generator. It would run possibly 12 hours a day, 7 days a week on pure waste motor oil. The oil would be filtered and heated, and the engine would be started and shut down on regular diesel fuel.

Can I expect to run those kind of hours burning WMO without ruining the engine? I'd like to see 10,000+ hours between major overhauls. Does anybody think this is possible? Will the engine get too coked up before then?

Listeroid Engines / Does anyone run a Lister exclusively on WMO?
« on: May 20, 2009, 02:38:56 AM »
I've wanted a lister engine for years. I've never had a good enough reason until now. I have a big new shop and I'd like to run a lister for power and heat, maybe even an air compressor and air conditioning too. :D

Anyway, I have no source for WVO. It has all been spoken for long ago. I do; however, have a LOT of waste motor oil and transmission fluid! The first step obviously is cleaning the oil, I'd probably use a centrifuge for that. I'd rather talk about that in another post.

My question is, does anybod run a lister exclusively on WMO, aside from start up and shut down? If I was to try such a thing, would my Lister live very long? Which parts would be mostly damaged with used oil rather than plain fresh diesel? I would basically think of those as regular maintainence items, if I can burn free fuel....

Engines / Changfa engine?
« on: November 14, 2008, 06:15:49 AM »
I've been interested in buying a Changfa engine to play with for a long time, now that I'm finally getting around to it, it seems the EPA has banned them in the US. Am I correct? Is there any legal way for me to buy a new Changfa diesel in the US?
