Hello
There seems to be alot of Canadians on this site (it may even be Canadian for all I know) so I was curious about getting into Canada. I recently drove 14 hours to International Falls to be told I could not enter your country. There is apparantly an arrest for assault 10 years ago that is on my record even though I was not convicted. The border gaurd (or what ever you call them) in a polite and professional manor decided I was an unsavory character and apparently a threat to all Canadians. I have been to Canada before and I didn't have any trouble before. This was pre - 911 so maybe they dig deeper now.
It was compounded by the fact that when we were turned around to go back to the American side we were treated like common criminals by our own. We were goaded, intimidated, searched, and literally treated like trash. They seemed to be trying to entice us to confrontation. I sensed that they were itching to use their pepper spray. What really made this a bad experience is that I had my 16 y.o. son with me (whom I see 1 time a year for 2 weeks) and he was really shaken up over this experience. I was very ashamed that our countrymen behave this way. I understand that they have a job to do but they could do it politely instead of being so confrontational. I suppose it has something to do with the very large photo of George Bush that stares down at you while you stand there being goaded.
We didn't get to fish in Canada. We stayed the night in International Falls to wake up to rain the next day and decided to return home. I wasted alot of time and money for a nice father son experience that didn't happen in Canada. We have our boat in the water here at a nearby lake and are really enjoying it, but the fish are a bit smaller. All I can say about the whole situation is that it is a sad thing our governments are doing to us. Perhaps it's time for a revolution.
