Engines / ST3 Fuel leaking from injector pump identification help
« on: November 16, 2024, 03:15:55 PM »
Hi,

I understand there are threads around with great info in about this problem and I have followed them for most of the way through but I'm looking for advice on an issue.

I have an ST3 based gen set, Unit was stanby use and conditionn wise inside looks brand new but when I recived it the sump was moslty thind oil with diesel so I knew there was an issue from there, Following the info around all the low pressure side was checked and nothing leaked, from there I checked the leak off pipes and injector lines and all was good there including when running also.

I losend the three joins above the injector pumps and all three are getting fuel though one seemed a tad dryer but I can here to creek from the injectors during turnover. I think if I remove the pipes I should see if they all work unless this leak only happens when the pump is under pressure, I placed the decompression on with the crankcase door off and turned the unit over a handfull of times with fuel enabled in hopes id see something leaking but I have strugged to see anything, I can hear the injectors fire and nothing really gets wet or drips in a noticable way.

When running I can watch the fuel level drop over 30 - 40 seconds with something like 100ml used in that space so I know one of them must be leaking on the underside at running speed but it seems to run smooth with no smoke or stutter and the leak only seems to happen when running so Id think its the injector pumps now given I didnt find anything at all the other joints, I understand this is on the rare side given it seems the engine hasnt done many hours.

How can I go about find the right one, I'm a tad lost and Id rather not have to take all three out if I can avoid it, though needs must if thats the case, it'll be a learning experience

Any pointers or help would be appreacited

Thanks, Dash

Hi,

I recently picked up a 3.5kVA ST1 based startomatic with a brushed gen/starter head, the unit is based on the newer electronic style SOM system. The set has around 70 hours on and is in good condition though the SOM box is badly corroded along with some of the relays.

Would anyone have the diagram for these Electronic based units, worst case I could work back to figure it out but thought to see if anyone has the info, all the relays are corroded beyond use as pins are broken or missing, so I'll work my way round that ; they look like ones you can get now with a modern equivelant, but I may have to add them externally to the boards and remove the old holders as the pins are gone in some from rust
