Engines / JP3 Change Over Valves.
« on: May 27, 2023, 02:06:08 PM »
I am running a JP3 in my narrowboat and was recently pushing against a strong flow coming up the Thames. As I was working the engine I used the low compression option for the first time.  After the initial experience of the hissing and barking while going from high to low, I found that the engine ran very cleanly (after the engine was at running temp) in low.  I am now on a canal which doesn’t require the effort so have been leaving them set to high comp.  My problem is that I now have a slight leak in number two (although its seems to have had no effect on the performance).  It seems to be hissing through the nut holding the wheel in place.  I assume there is a bit of carbon build up - does anyone have a clever trick for getting a better seal?

Note: I stopped reading the manual for removal when it was suggesting that I hammer chunks of wood into the block!

Listeroid Engines / JP3 and PRM500
« on: October 17, 2022, 03:40:45 PM »
I have a PRM500 gearbox attached to my JP3 in a narrowboat. No problems except that I have not found the sweet spot where the gearbox will go into gear without crunching. I have dropped the revs as low as I dare but even at its best, there is still some crunch, especially for reverse.  I have no tachometer so don’t really know how slow I can get it but I do find there is a spot where it just brings the revs back up a little so slowing it down further risks a stall which is not desirable as I am generally using forward/reverse when approaching immovable objects!

I am interested to hear your opinions.  Hopefully I have just missed something obvious or perhaps crunching goes with the territory!

Listeroid Engines / JP3 in Narrowboat Smoke and Oiling
« on: October 17, 2022, 03:32:34 PM »
Hi,

I am running a jP3 in a narrowboat and am currently on the River Stort.  It has been shallow/weedy and places (deep draught)  so the engine has been loaded up more than normal.  This has been exacerbated by weed regularly wrapping around the prop causing even more drag (and load). The result is more smoke than usual (expected?) but also a lot of oil has been spraying out the vertical exhaust. There was actually pools of oil around the base of the exhaust (on the roof). Is this what you would expect when under heavy load?

I was advised, at purchase, to oil the rockers/valves etc and fill the cylinder head recess prior to each start, which I do. The manual only says to do this after a service/starting first time etc. Is it necessary to do this every time given that each running day is, at most, 4-5 hours and never at full revs?  I sometimes wonder whether I am giving her too much oil although I do keep an eye on the dipstick level.

Any advice/experience welcome.

Cheers

Steve
