Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / Jp4
« on: September 18, 2024, 04:39:59 PM »
Hi..
I have a 1951 JP4 with starter motor that was a generator it turns over freely and would run . There is some rust but mainly on the bolts, it’s in good condition for an engine over 70 years old.. It is on my friends farm on the West coast of New Zealand. I don’t know what it’s worth but am happy to have that discussion..
Cheers Daryl

Original Lister Cs Engines / JP4 startup
« on: December 23, 2023, 01:53:50 AM »
Hi..
My JP4 is in storage at a friends place. I will be there in 2 weeks and want to start her up, it’s been stored for a while I’m guessing over 10 years...
What is the start up procedure. It is a 1951 and turns over freely . The decompressor levers are seized and that will be my first job...
Cheers Owenga.

Original Lister Cs Engines / New toys.... JP4 Hr3
« on: October 14, 2023, 11:47:21 PM »
Hi..
I have purchased two Lister engines firstly a tidy running HR3 that has had a generator but it had been taken off and probably gone to scrap. I will put 3ph 12/15 Kw alternator on it and mount on a trailer as a power supply for on site engineering work..

The most interesting engine by far is a JP4 I just bought that has had its alternator removed as well. This engine has been shed stored and in very good condition and turns over freely. I’m not sure what I’ll do with it..... I’ve always wanted an old Launch with a Lister or Gardener so it might end up being a marine engine.. the tag has  “spec 38 4 34 ‘.. I’m thinking it’s 1938 ?

Original Lister Cs Engines / CS6 Loose flywheels
« on: May 24, 2023, 08:20:47 PM »
Hi..
I got given a CS8 with a SOM alternator in good condition , so I donated my CS6 to my brother who is doing it up to use with his off grid solar... there are a few issues as you would expect but the trickiest would be the flywheels have both slogged out the bore and the crank is also undersize.
My first idea was build up the crank with weld and machine back to oversized then bore the wheels to suit, but that would make it bigger diameter than the main bearings..
We could fit “taperlocks” but there is limited material in the wheel boss..

Any suggestions...... Owenga

It apparently was still working about 2 years ago.. I’m hoping to service it and check everything over then fire it up, it did have a the lash cap for the inlet valve in the tapped cover. I have refitted it...

Question.. it was startomatic but there is no control box, apparently they just hooked up phase and neutral  and ran power straight into the house, but the voltage did fluctuate..
If I run this do I need some more components.... ?

Cheers Owenga...

Original Lister Cs Engines / Removing the camshaft CS6
« on: November 11, 2020, 10:35:11 PM »
I have been applying penetrant to the govenor and trying to move it on the cam with a hammer and punch, I am not making progress and I’m concerned that I will damage the governor... so I have decided to remove the cam... Question...... what holds it in ? I have removed the pushrods and raised the lifters out of the way, there is obviously a retainer or something holding it in...

Thanks Owenga....

Original Lister Cs Engines / Seized govenor CS6
« on: November 08, 2020, 12:55:32 AM »
Hi..
I have carefully removed the governor housing and the shaft (not the cam) is seized,I can free that up but I see the mechanism that slides on the cam and the weights are stuck. Can someone tell me how to find the timing  marks as I want to remove the cam and get it all working so it will govern itself..

I have concluded from this that another CS that I know of has been retired because of over volt issues, I’m thinking it has similar problems and is just over reving .....
I look forward to some help with timing.......Daryl..

Original Lister Cs Engines / Seized fuel pump
« on: October 10, 2020, 09:42:00 PM »
Hi..
I started work on my CS6 , yesterday the lifter that works the fuel was jammed on the top of the stroke so I rotated the crank 180 and carefully tapped it down with the pump off, but it is tight so I’ll have to take the cam housing off and dismantle it.. Also I’m not sure how to set the governor etc to start.. I don’t think I’ll use the SOM it’s not in good shape. I should be able to find a modern belt drive alternator.... :)

Any suggestions on how to go about restore [ im a maintenance engineer but not familiar with Lister }......Thanks  Daryl New Zealand...
