Original Lister Cs Engines / 8-1 Startomatic no voltage output
« on: June 26, 2014, 09:07:27 PM »
Well, she's up and running with new brushes but there's no voltage output.  My generator knowledge is limited at best, but I seem to remember on long dormant machines they can lose their magnetism and need to be flashed with a battery to get the field excited.  Does this ring a bell with anyone?  I don't have the adequate 24 VDC power to get it started but if I push the start button and roll by hand it will motor until my battery charger trips out so i'm assuming at least the series field and armature windings are good.  I just hope the main and aux fields are good.  Any ideas out there?

Thanks,
Jim

Original Lister Cs Engines / 8-1 Injector return line

What is the purpose of the return line?  I've yet to see any fuel out of it, granted I've only run it with no load.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Made some smoke today.
« on: June 01, 2014, 03:59:33 AM »
She's back together other than the electrics.  Since I had the crank turned down to accommodate the tapered sleeves the starting handle doesn't really grab the shaft good enough to get a good purchase on the shaft.  I did get a few puffs of smoke but she didn't start.  I spent a lot of the day chiseling and filing the keyway deeper and i have some stock coming monday to make a bushing for the handle.

BTW, when yall start by hand; do you get it rolling with the exhaust valve lifted, then release the exhaust valve and keep cranking by hand or do you stop cranking before releasing the exhaust valve?

There's a screw and locknut below the injection pump which probably applies pressure to the pump tappet, what's it for?

Does anyone have a 8-1 Startomatic generator parts list?   I'd like to know the part numbers, sizes and grades of carbon for all the brushes.

Thanks,

Original Lister Cs Engines / 8-1 oil ring groove clearance
« on: February 23, 2014, 08:54:17 AM »
My new rings arrived and the oil ring does not fit the ring groove, the groove is clean and in good shape so I believe the ring is too wide.  The groove is approximately 0.187" as measured with calipers and so is the ring, anyone have an idea what the clearance should be?

Thanks

Does anyone know how this system is supposed to work?

  • Does the slinger slightly touch the felt?
  • Do the convex portion/portions ride under the felt?
  • Does the entire slinger ride under the felt?

Thanks.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Startomatic speed change for 60Hz
« on: January 18, 2014, 12:52:21 AM »
My startomatic is designed for 50 Hz and I'm thinking of cutting the generator v-belt diameter down to get 60 Hz (1800 RPM) at the generator shaft, I'd appeciate any comments/concerns.

Thanks,

Original Lister Cs Engines / Startomatic Generator Rewind
« on: January 18, 2014, 12:47:00 AM »
My new to me 8-1 startomatic seems to have a burned stator coil, is anyone aware of a rewind shop familiar with lister's combined DC/AC coils or is it something that any decent rewind shop could handle?

Thanks

Original Lister Cs Engines / 8-1 Startomatic flywheel repair
« on: January 18, 2014, 12:43:11 AM »
Hi all,

First off, thanks for providing this forum and the input that makes it such an informative site.

I'm rebuilding a 8-1 startomatic and would like your opinions on my planned flywheel repair.  The drive side shaft and bore are a mess and I'm planning to repair by cutting the shaft down to 1-15/16 and boring the hub to accommodate the locking assy below.

Thanks.
