Listeroid Engines / What Oil?
« on: August 02, 2012, 03:57:38 PM »
What oil does everyone use in your splash lubed engines (no pump)?

I currently have 10-40 in there, but its just there for test runs. It also has a quart of Lucas in there.

I want to know what to put in long-term. I've heard everything from straight 30 to 85-140.

Polished fly wheels? Or painted?

I'm talking about the outer rim.

Listeroid Engines / KOEL 8/1 Project
« on: July 13, 2012, 04:10:35 AM »
Making some Progress on the Kirloskar 8/1 with ST5 project.

I laid out and tacked together the subframe. It's from 2" x 3" thick wall. Dimensions are 20" x 60". I also cut out 2 20" x 20" plates from 3/16" material for bases.
Here's a pic of the frame:

Here is pic of the plate laying on the frame:

Here is a pic with the ST5 genny sitting on the frame for some measurements:

I also got the lister off of the crates and packing. I started her for a second just sitting on the shop floor. It scooted a little but would pretty much just sit there and pop...pop...pop away.

It looks as though for belt clearance, unless I build up a base to bolt to, I am going to have to offset the engine and genny head to one side of the frame. Allowing the flywheel and generator pully to hang over the side. Anyone have any thoughts on this or anything you see in the pics?

One last pic of her on the floor with no packing (this pic also shows my air filter mod):

Lister Based Generators / Direct Drive?
« on: July 11, 2012, 04:21:25 AM »
Hey All,

I've seen multiple discussions here about direct drive starters, rubber wheels, hockey pucks, etc.

What about direct driving the gen head itself with an 11" friction pulley? One could build the head on a slide mechanism and have a lever (clutch) they use to push the head into the flywheel when generating.

Thoughts?
Has this already been hashed and I missed it?

Listeroid Engines / Newbie here - Proud owner of a Kirloskar 8/1-
« on: July 03, 2012, 12:31:55 AM »
Hey All,

Lurker here for many, many months. I finally made my first purchase from Gary at DES. A KOEL 8/1. I picked it up Friday and have it uncrated and test ran on the pallet for a few seconds (that was scary!).

Also picked up an ST5 Head and plan to generate to pump some water and furnish some power to out buildings. I'm really just getting my feet wet with this one, and plan to generate for our home with something bigger (18/1, 16/2). I absolutely love the simplicity and diverse fuel sources of these slow turning diesels. And the sound of course!

I'm a farmer in NW Oklahoma. I work in banking as a day job to support the farming "hobby". I'm a pilot, motorcycle owner, and love operating and mechanic-ing on anything with an engine!

My primary interest in these engines is for power generation. As a fierce Libertarian, and a huge supporter of farm life and rural America, electricty is the only area where I am dependent on anyone. It's time to fix that. I'm not a "prepper" per say, but we could go a while without any outside assistance if needed.

There you have it. That's me - OKFarmer
