Lister Based Generators / TS2 - injector question
« on: September 24, 2011, 11:56:53 AM »
I am checking out a TS2 driven 9kw gen set  that the seller says "This diesel has mechanical injectors and will run on almost any available heavy fuel including filtered french fry oil."

When asking about WVO filtering etc on another part of this forum, dieselgman says "Speaking strictly to your question about Lister TS2 and WVO - Since this is a direct injected engine and has fairly small ports and passages, carbon build-up will be an issue. I believe you will have to preheat your fuel or convert it to biodiesel if you expect to burn it in a TS series engine. If you preheat, I believe it will run through the TS fuel injection without an issue. That process does get a bit complicated."

I am very new to this whole process and am trying to SIMPLIFY this as much as possible.

I am wondering if anyone can help me with the following:

1 - Are mechanical and direct injectors the same thing?
2 - Could this TS2 have mechanical injectors?
3 - Is there an easy way to determine the type of injector?
Thanks for any guidance.

Waste Vegetable Oil / What type of storage barrel and how many steps
« on: September 21, 2011, 02:12:22 PM »
Hi
I am just beginning to wrap head around the WVO process for a Lister Petter TS2 driven generator and I think I have read well over 2000 post so far - ouch, my brain is beginning to hurt ;D, my eyes are glazing over and the information is getting scrambled, so please have patience with a newbie.

I live in Central, Ontario, Canada and my hope is to set up something simple but effective where I can use the "settling" technique and transfer the WVO through three or four barrels for 3-4 weeks at a time.

I have also read about dewatering, heating, 2 micron filtering, centrifuging etc. - sounds much more complicated than "settling"`and I would appreciate advice on how necessary each of these steps might be for the LP TS2.

I have lots of space in my shop (unheated) to store the necessary barrels etc.

A couple of specific questions:
  • Must I use metal (steel) barrels or will plastic work as well for both processing and storage?
  • Is the simple settling approach adequate or do I need to do more (and what more) in preparing the oil for use?

Appreciate any and all advise and insights.

Would like to find downloadable (preferably free) service manual for this engine.

Any help appreciated

Lister Based Generators / Newbie - What to do? 5kW or 9kW or ???
« on: September 02, 2011, 12:56:24 PM »
Hi
Thank you for letting me join this forum.
I have been trying to decide what route to go in providing back-up power for our farm house, our fully equipped guest cabin and our barn (no animals).

I am leaning toward Lister or Lister/Petter engines based on reputation and some discussions here, and have found the following:

One cylinder Lister with 5kW Flygt generator - starts and runs well - 2 X 240 outlets and six X 120 outlets - mounted on a frame.

Two cylinder Lister Petter with a rebuilt (2002) 9kW Flygt generator.

I don't always believe that bigger is better so I would like to pose the question to those more experienced than me (which pretty much means everyone here)
"Are either of these units suitable for the following:

1 - A few lights (2-3) in the barn and maybe a power tool once or twice
2 - A guest cabin with full size fridge, electric stove, microwave, TV, smal AC unit, fan on propane fireplace, hot water tank, hot tub, whirlpool bath
3 - Main house with 2 freezers, large fridge, hot water tank, oil furnace, shallow well water pump, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, TV, computer and some lights.

I know we can stage and balance some things ourselves but we can't be sure guests in our cabin will do tje same.

I am thinking the 9kW might be a minimum but I appreciate any insights from the experts.

Also appreciate an idea of reasonable prices - always open to a great deal but want to be fair as well.

BTW - thanks for this forum

Bob
