Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / Lister JK -JP 6 head
« on: May 17, 2012, 08:30:19 PM »
I have a spare head if anyone is interested it is the double type that was fitted only to the six cylinder JP/K range and these are prone to cracking if overheated. The head I have is not cracked but needs a skim and refurb.

Original Lister Cs Engines / JK6 BUMP CLEARENCE
« on: January 03, 2012, 08:55:17 PM »
I am well on with the rebuild the liners and pistons are now fitted, I am at the stage where I need to check the piston to head clearance. It is clear in the manual how you do this with a small piece of lead, and I have loads of spare shims as well as three gaskets.

What is not clear though is when you fit the head to measure the lead do you fit a gasket or assemble without one. If you do fit a gasket do you use a new one as the operation will compress it so I would have thought it would not seal as good when you assemble finaly.

Original Lister Cs Engines / JK liners
« on: October 23, 2011, 07:12:00 PM »
I have bought 6 liners for my JK6 like an idiot I have binned the old ones and the new ones don't fit they are to wide at the top other than that they are perfect. Does anyone know if the JK6/ JP6 has different liners than the rest of the JP/JK range. The cylinder heads on the 6 are twins unlike the rest of the range which has single heads. Does anyone have the lister part number for the JK/P3 or 4 cylinder liners.

Engines / Lister JP straight top liners
« on: May 22, 2011, 06:51:27 PM »
I have been offered  some straight top liners at a reasonable price, I need two of the six for sure but I haven't got round to cleaning the others up yet. The liners in the engine were stepped top and I understand that these were the later ones introduced to overcome a problem with head gasket failure. The lister manual I have says that either can be used as long as they are all the same

So my question is are the straight top liners any good or are they more prone to head gasket problems.

Engines / Pulley removal
« on: May 20, 2011, 05:56:31 PM »
I am struggling to get the pulley of the front of the crank (lister JK6) its a cast iron pulley and there is not much room to get a puller in. I have it soaking in diesel and have left a 2 leg puller on over night.

Does anyone have any tips would heat help.

Engines / Painting Liners
« on: May 18, 2011, 08:10:23 AM »
In the manual for the JK6 it states to paint the outside of the liners before installing, I am intending to run antifreeze - corrosion inhibitor. Is painting them still recommended and if it is what is the best type of paint.

Engines / Lister JK6
« on: April 02, 2011, 05:39:32 PM »
I have recently bought a barge powered by a 1957 JK6 it has not run for years and I have been informed that it had head gasket failure. I have been talking to some locals who know JK6 engines from years ago and they say they are prone to cracking heads if run with low water or if they are allowed to freeze. I have bought spare JK6 off a generator with low hours that had been run without oil and seized. I have stripped the spare engine and the heads seem fine but the crank is u/s. The liners are perfect and the pistons show little wear however they are pitted where water has stood on top of them. I intend to refurbish the engine in the barge using parts off the generator if required and have a few specific questions, please bear in mind that the engine will have to be serviceable and reliable

1. are the heads prone to cracking and if they are can you see the cracks or do i need to pressure test the heads
2. is there a suitable 24v alternator that has the correct sized pulley as the dynamo - voltage regulator dont look to good
3. what is the best antifreeze to use when

I have a lister maual and a disk with some additional notes on, I also found a complete head gasket set in the engine room today :-)
