General Discussion / Honda with ST Head Questions
« on: July 18, 2006, 11:16:59 PM »
I'd like to know what the folks here think what would be the best way to couple a Honda engine to a ST Head.
I will have several ST sizes between 5.5 kW and 10 kW by the weekend using one 7.5 kW for the 12/2 Listeroid project.

Would a 13 HP GX390 be strong enough for a belt driven solution for the 5.5 kW or maybe even the 7.5 kW?

Is it possible to reduce the speed on a GX 620 to 1800 RPM to drive the head with a spider coupling? Or would the torque/engine performance suffer too much?

General Discussion / Canadian Customs Codes?
« on: July 14, 2006, 05:35:32 PM »
I would appreciate if someone who has already imported a Listeroid and/or ST Head, could post the Canadian Customs Tariff Code for 'Stationary Diesel Engines' and 'ST Heads or Alternators'.

Lister Based Generators / Sources for generator heads?

I'd like to see a listing of all the suppliers/manufacturers of generator heads shipping to/from Canada and the U.S..

Listeroid Engines / 12/2-650 RPM or 12/1-1000 RPM
« on: March 19, 2006, 08:21:00 PM »
I know I need between 6.5 KW to 7.5 KW in an alternator, but I can't make up my mind if I should get a 12 HP Twin or Single.
I like the idea of the 650 RPM, but that would mean the Twin.

I take it that Twins are harder to work on, that more can go wrong, that they are louder.
Has there been a comparison in noise between the Twin @ 650 RPM compared to the Single @ 1000 RPM?

General Discussion / Rubber Engine Mounts - Listers vs. Small Engines
« on: March 18, 2006, 10:07:37 PM »
I read most of the posts regarding bolting down a Lister to a concrete slab or other heavy base and it makes complete sense.
It appears not many think it neccessary to have some kind of rubber shocks between the engine and the base.
My neighbor, who has used many Diesels during his mining career, argued that if they are bolted to concrete, the vibration, will destroy the engines internally. Is there anything to this?

I have had several generators with small 3600 RPM engines. All mounted with rubber engine mounts. My firepump has no mounts between the frame and engine, but some more or less effective rubber feet under the frame.
What are the rubber shock mounts really preventing in a direct coupled high RPM generator application?

If I were to couple one of these 3600 RPM engines with a spider coupling (Elastomer Jaw Coupling) to an alternator, could both be bolted tight to a frame and then have some rubber shocks between the frame and the ground?

General Discussion / 3600 RPM Generator Head Conversion Question
« on: March 15, 2006, 03:01:59 AM »
I have two generator heads (direct couple) sitting idle because I can not find reasonable priced Honda engines with a tapered shaft to put them to work again. The only place in Canada that has reasonable prices on engines is Northern Tool, but they mostly have straight shaft engines and their shipping to the Yukon is prohibitive.
One of the generator heads is a 9000 Watt Winco and the other a 6500 Watt KT-6.5 Chinese head.
The problem of course is that they lack the engine side bearing. I was thinking instead of spending big money on fixing these generator sets, I could take the heads to a machine shop and have them machine a faceplate with bearing and shaft-stub. Maybe use the tapered crankshafts of the destroyed engines to machine the straight shaft part.
That way I could use them either on a Listeroid or it would be much easier to couple them with any straight shaft engine including the smaller Hatz Diesel engines using spider couplings.

Has anybody done such a conversion?
Is coupling an engine to a head with spider couplings as straightforward as I think it is?
If I find a straight shaft Honda engine, do I need to consider what kind of governor it has?
My impression was that all of them have a governor that adjusts automatically to keep the engine speed on load increase/decrease.
Most of these engines are either listed as 'Manual Throttle/Choke' or 'Remote Throttle/Choke'.
Can both be used?

I would appreciate your suggestions.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Which Lister Model?
« on: March 10, 2006, 05:26:44 AM »
Hi,
glad to have found this place!
My family lives in a remote setting in Canada's Yukon. My interest in Listers or slow RPM engines got sparked recently when we had two generator engines fail within a few month. One was a B&S Vanguard 16 HP, the other a DEK F420 Chinese Diesel. None really suitable to run our operation on a day to day basis.
Now I'm looking either to find an original Lister or buying a Listeroid from India. If it only were so easy as ordering them in Canada. So far I have had no luck.
On my travels through our region I have seen many old Diesels in Mines and abandoned buildings. So they are around.
Even a neighbor has a variety of Diesels spread around his yard. Unfortunately all of them are missing parts.
I was hoping that some of the experts here could help me out and identify the engines and maybe even tell me if it's worth working on them.
One is a 3HP Lister CS with the cylinder head missing. The Label reads 3HP - 600RPM - CS60788 - Spec 208|13.
Except for the missing head, the engine still looks very nice. This one is really too small for us, but it would make a nice engine to start out with.
He showed me another engine which was taken apart by another owner, but then one box of parts went to the landfill before my neighbor rescued the remains of the engine. The flywheel is still there, but not mounted.
I'd like to show two photos here, if the link works.
I would appreciate if someone could provide me with the Model Type and related info, and expert advise if it would be a worthwhile rebuilding project.
