Lister Based Generators / HR2 Cooling duct
« on: April 12, 2016, 04:25:37 PM »
Just a quick one… I’m going to rebuild the cooling duct tomorrow now that the weather is warming up…
In all the drawings and pictures I’ve seen of the HR units the hot air ducting is always facing upwards, is there a reason for this?
It would be much easier for me to remove the original ducting (facing upwards) and make new ducting coming straight out of the engine to the outside wall of my generator shed.
Is it ok to do this???

Thanks in advance

Lister Based Generators / HR2 info please
« on: February 21, 2016, 04:38:41 PM »
Hi Guys,
Haven't been on here for ages, haven't needed to as the old ST3 had been behaving itself. It finally gave up after running for 5 years for up to 8 hours a day.
Anyway now have a 1976 HR2 with 15kva alternator, believe it to be ex MOD and only has 500hrs use.
After building a sound proof shed and underground exhaust system it run perfectly for 2 days (about 8hrs) on the 3rd day it was chucking out a lot of white smoke which I believe was un-burnt fuel, believing the bores where glazed I fully loaded it and sprayed a mist of water down the inlet. This cured the white smoke but after a couple of weeks running it's still blowing a small amount of blue smoke and using a bit of oil.
I want to change the oil but I totally confused after reading loads of threads on the subject which all seem to contradict one another.
I can't get the 20/20 stated by Lister out here in France (looked everywhere) some threads suggest 15/40???
Your vast knowledge would be much appreciated on this much talked about subject.
Also any other advice on running this HR2 would be greatly received.
Thanks in advance

Engines / ST3

Need to order full gasket set for my ST3 problem is my supplier needs to know if it's 1975 onwards.
The engine plate is missing how can I tell what sort of age it is? (pre or post 1975)
Thanks as always.

Generators / Battery bank

Hi Guys,
Haven’t been on here for ages...just shows how well the ST3 has been running.
Right... I’ve now managed to get hold of:-
12 x Yuasa Endurance EN160-6, 6 volt, 160 amp hour batteries. And a 48volt rectifier. (from a computer ups)

At the moment I’ve got 8 batteries charging off the rectifier and a 12volt inverter producing 220volts for use in the cabin (every day I swap the inverter to another pair of batteries to keep the discharge equal)

Can anyone tell me the best way of setting up a system which charges of my 10kva(maximum) generator?
Don’t mind if I have to buy new inverter and charger or how many batteries I use at whatever voltage. Cost and simplest system is what I’m after.

Suggestion’s greatly appreciated.

Generators / Drop in engine speed and voltage
« on: December 18, 2010, 08:09:52 PM »
Hi Guys,

Quick question;
I have an ST3 running a Brush alternator I’d guess about 10kva.
It supplies electric to my cabin, which it's been doing for 8hrs a day for the last year. I carry out regular maintenance on the engine but all I have done to the alternator since owning it is grease the bearings.
Its running fine with a load of about 2kw (lighting, TV, fridge etc, etc) however if I switch on something else of a high-ish wattage, my water pump for example, I can hear the engine speed drop a little and the voltage drops from 220v to around 200. It’s never done this before even when running kettles heaters etc at the same time. I’ve checked all the cabin wiring which is fine so its defiantly a problem with the generator.
Can anyone give me some advice on what the problem might be?
Is it likely to be the alternator its self and is there a way for me to test it with a multi-meter or is it more likely to be the engine lacking power or the governor not increasing the engine output when needed.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks Andy

Engines / Ideal running temp for ST3
« on: November 26, 2010, 10:36:02 AM »
Hi Guys,

Winters here now in France, minus 4 last night.

As some of you already know I have an ST3 supplying electric to my cabin, other than a very sooty exhaust I've had absolutly no problems with it for over a year. The genny is in a sealed hole in the ground with fans supplying air for cooling etc. Its very hot here in the summer so I have a very good system for keeping it cool but now I'm wondering if its running to cold.

The temperature of the air entering the cooling intake is around 16 degrees C. I was told back in the summer that this figure should not exceed 40 c but given no minimum.

What is the ideal temperature ?

The genny has started to struggle starting since the weather has got colder (it started fine last winter at upto minus 18)

I'm gonna give it the once over today so might have more details later.

Thanks for any replys

Andy

Engines / Decoke ST3
« on: July 19, 2010, 09:19:57 AM »
Hi Guys, got to say what a great forum very enlighting, I'm an Englishman living in rural France running a carp fishery. I have no mains electric so use a generator, I've had 4 different modern gennys and had nothing but trouble with them infact they are now all in pieces behind my shed. I'm a mechanical systems engineer by trade but I'm in my early 30's and not used this older type of engine (Metric LOL) I've been running a Lister ST3 since last November and other than topping it up with a bit of oil and adjusting the fuel solinoid it hasn't missed a beat.
Sorry if this question has been asked before (I've done a search)
Is there an easy way decoke the exhaust system?
Is there a way of preventing build up?
Thanks in advance
Andy
