Lister Based Generators / Reverse power protection
« on: April 01, 2016, 10:03:55 AM »
Does anyone have any idea of a suitable 'reverse power' protection setting for a HR2 15kVA genset ? I have one coupled to an 'off grid' system with an SMA inverter and several 'AC coupled' sources. If a generator start is requested to charge the batteries and then say the wind gets up and starts to put more current onto the AC bus than the genny is producing it shuts down. That's fair enough, but if the wind is gusty the generator keeps stopping and starting, just wondered if the current default setting was too low, it's 3% for 30 seconds I think. Do you think I could raise it?

Engines / SR2 oil leak
« on: September 01, 2012, 07:52:23 AM »
Morning chaps,

Cyril my 1972 SR2 has been leaking oil since I bought him, no big deal but he'd only done 50h when I bought him and has just clocked up another hundred as back up for my 'off grid' set up. It was nothing major, just wee drips that were getting blown onto my battery bank by the fan. As it was a poor day on Wednesday I had a look at it.

It was quite a common leak on the SR's and ST's and it came from the D shaped rubbers sandwiched between the heads and alloy pump and pushrod casing.

Being a lazy type and as the engine only had 150h on it I did them without removing the heads http://lifeattheendoftheroad.wordpress.com/2012/08/30/wettest-summer-in-100years-aye-right/ not very 'kosher' I know but it did the trick and saved me some graft.

Lister Based Generators / Startomatic solenoid
« on: July 23, 2012, 08:04:13 AM »
Hi Chaps,

my mates ST2 startomatic has just burnt out its third starter solenoid in five years.

I know that may not sound excessive to some folks but this genny only starts around a few dozen times a year, if that, probably uses less than twenty gallons of fuel a year.

http://lifeattheendoftheroad.wordpress.com/2012/07/22/the-perfect-memento/

As it's just a backup for a solar/hydro system in a remote 'holiday let' it does not get much use but needs to be 'idiot proof'.

Is it possible that something is keeping the solenoid energized  ??? and if so what, any ideas peeps.

Lister Based Generators / Charging problem on ST2 with Brush head
« on: November 14, 2011, 09:23:31 PM »
Hi all,

my Lister ST2 stopped charging the batteries years ago when the resistor thing burnt out in the box on top of the alternator. I lived with it quite happily by connecting an ordinary battery charger to the AC output. Anyway I recently acquired a good 2nd hand one so had a go at fitting it today.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

As you can see the original is burnt out, when I fitted the replacement it started to get mad hot so I disconnected it pronto before starting the genny. However once the genny was running I reconnected it and it charged fine, it only seems to get hot once the generator has stopped.

Any ideas chaps, in words of one syllable  ;D

The new resistor is off a 12v 3kW single cylinder if that makes any difference  :-\

Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / Lister JP2's Scotland
« on: September 19, 2011, 09:02:32 PM »
Hi Chaps,

a mate of mine is want shut of two JP2 DC generators that used to supply a Georgian mansion on Raasay.

http://www.navitron.org.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3234.msg30629.html#msg30629 that's them a few years ago but they're exactly the same now. Some guy was supposed to have bought them then but never turned up for them. Now the business has been sold http://www.raasayengineering.co.uk/ and the new owner needs the room.

Dunno what he's after for them but it will be cheap

Lister Based Generators / Newage Stamford manual
« on: September 10, 2011, 09:29:25 AM »
Just found a Newage Stamford 'C' range alternator manual.

It covers SC and MSC 234, 334, 534, 634, 734, 636 and 736 machine designations.

If anyone can make use of it PM me and I'll post it for cost.

Lister Based Generators / Interesting site

Came across this site http://www.realdiesels.co.uk/listeridentification.html some time ago when searching for Lister info and it's well worth a look. They also sell parts and spares, I've no connection with them other than exchanging a few emails but the owner is very helpful.

Lister Based Generators / Remote starting an SR2
« on: August 27, 2011, 05:50:07 PM »
Has anyone had any success starting an SR2 via an inverter? It's a genuine Lister electric start genset with the Brush alternator that acts as a motor to spin it up instead of the more conventional starter motor. Consequently it needs to be decompressed until the motor reaches full speed so I'm guessing I need a couple of solenoids for the fuel and decompresser and some kind of  module to keep the fuel on, operate the solenoid for the decompresser and spin up the starter shortly afterwards. Then release the decompresser whilst keeping the motor spinning for a few seconds.

Any thoughts guys??

Lister Based Generators / AVR for HRW
« on: April 11, 2010, 02:03:39 PM »
Hi all,

first post and I'm desperate.

Harry my trusty Lister HRW2 15kva single phase generator is, I think, in need of a new AVR and I'm having difficulty sourcing one for less than £320 :o

If no other option is open to me I will shell out the money but the complete generator with only 50 hours on the clock only cost me £1000

Any help would be greatly appreciated chaps as it is my main back up for when the wind turbine does not turn and summer is on the way  ;D

Cheers, Paul
