As I mentioned in an earlier post I picked up our Power Solutions 6/1 today. I uncrated in about an hour. Someone on this board suggested a Sawzall…thankyou who ever you are.
With the crate still on my truck I initially cut just enough without the blade going inside the crate so that I could take the top off and see inside…it was like an early Christmas peeking in. I then pulled the Rocker arm cover and one of the head bolts. I attached a long connecting nut and a forged eye bolt. This gave me something to grab with the hoist… I lifted everything... engine, crate and palet and drove the truck out from under it. Once on solid ground and I knew the blade had clearance I zipped 4 vertical cuts from top to bottom in the corners of the crate. I was then able to open it like a tulip. As I type this the crate is keeping us warm in the wood furnace…. Its ~20 F out now.
My first impression was very positive and it only got better as I dug into things. I first looked at the paint and thought appropriate color, nice finish…not perfect but nice enough that I was careful to try not to scratch it. I pulled the covers and looked inside. Clean with no perceptible grit in any of the oil residue. I felt the residue... it was very heavy and dark like a gear oil, but it had no grit in at all that I could feel. The interior was painted a cream color. The interior paint seemed to e cover every where it was supposed to. I did see one corner that I thought might be trapped sand, however after digging at it with a knifepoint it was solidly part of the casting and not anything to worry about. One cover had an oil dip stick screwed into it. The inside looked as it should, the gear lash seemed right. The dipper is twisted a slight amount and seems it will hit the oil with more of the flat side than with an edge…I need to know more about this. The cam and the tappets looked good. The tappets both rotated while cranking by hand and their faces were very smooth to the point of shinny. The cylinder wall had crosshatched honing. This was all a look see with a trouble light.
The lower water port will need a bit of cleaning and I will set the upper port up for a thermostat. The breather valve was a bit rusty but it was easily wire brushed back to what it needed to be. I suspect that these are a subassembly that may have been sitting for some time before the rest to the engine was built. The rust on it was incongruent with the rest of the engine parts.
The crate contained extra parts that I was going to order to keep as spares. I.e. head gasket, bearings, valves, rings, mounting bolts and a double belt drive pulley. Also, a set of tools that I probably will never open.
This was the first decent look …I’ll dig in to it deeper and post more with pictures as I can.
