Engines / Lister TS3 crankshaft oil way blanking plug
« on: January 22, 2015, 12:02:43 AM »
Hi All
Just been working on a TS3 Lister Crankshaft, it had what looked like a pop rivet half out ( or half in) for the oil gallery plug, I thought that's not right, so I tried to move it (with my fingers) and was it loose, the crank is still in the engine, but I have no idea what type they use, are they screw in plugs or blanks knocked in and where do I get them, any ideas?

Engines / DB stanadyne injector pump on a 3 cylinder engine problems
« on: December 12, 2014, 10:57:59 AM »
Hi All
Ok it's not a Lister but don't anywhere else to look
I 'm working one this 1550rev   fixed speed  3 cylinder Perkins 3.52 w/ a DB Stynadyne injector pump, started instantly and ran fine, I slowed it down to about 1000 revs to check out a bit better when I was doing that if felt a bit rough on the spindle and the revs seemed a bit off, but when I put it back to where it was  the revs seem a bit lower and stop solinoid ( only has electric inside no manual stop,) will not shut the engine off, I looked inside the pump and it all look OK, anyone got any ideas on this or another forum to check it out
Thanks a lot Barry

Engines / low hours LISTER HR4 PROBLEMS
« on: April 18, 2014, 04:26:21 AM »
Hi all
Just stripped a fully recon'ed by the local Lister specialists a  Lister HR4 with very low hours ( maybe test hours no work?) which was smoking on two cylinders, the top piston ring  on one had worn the chrome off the ring and I could see where the chrome had worn in a gap and was blowing through, all the other  the top rings had worn the chrome also, the rest of the rings were perfect, the pistons and ring were the  a /market brand AE normally a good product. I decided to fit a full set of genuine Lister rings, when deciding to hone the cylinders, on  checking with a torch I found  only one cylinder was normal ( but this had a worn chrome ring)  shiny but no hone marks, one cylinder ( not a smoking one) was not bedded in at all, I could see all the hone marks from top to bottom very clear, the other two were half bedded in, non had any scuff marks or signs of seizing, non of the top rings that had the chrome worn off had large gaps (only 20 thou) and the gaps on all the other rings were normal , it didn't look a rough hone job , I gave it another hone and now they all look OK and the same, and will be fitting the genuine new rings, any comments on this would be welcome

Hi All
I have a few TL engines to rebuild, will TR pistons be any good (same bore) and whats the story about 3 and 4 ring pistons? when  3 ring piston used are the cylinder bore clearances reduced or are they just used in higher speed engines, any help would be great

Engines / HL 6 l lister injector pump question
« on: May 12, 2012, 03:44:55 AM »
Hi All
I have a HL6 Lister  engine on a genset, injector pump isn't working, I have several HR6 pumps that I could fit , what would be the result in engine power? ie thru the range or at full power, I have stripped these pumps down regular, if not satistfactory what can I do to increase the fuel, (no smoke screw ?) the HL6 is about 10% more HP than the HR6
To change the subject has anybody bought any Chinese Piston rings( or any other engine parts ).Direct from the manufactures,  you find them on google ie 200 sets min at a certain price, you could pay the price say 1500.00 and that might be last you see of it and the rings

Engines / reboring cylinders using a boring stand
« on: June 27, 2011, 02:41:40 AM »
Hi all
I have a cylinder boring machine and single cylinder boring stand and wish to  bore  HR Lister  cylinders ( 4 1/4" bore) , the hole in the  top of stand is about 70 mm (3 1/2")  so I think I need to bore  the hole to just over 4 1/4 so the boring head can go through to the clamped cylinder below. The clamped cylinder sits on the under side  of the soon to be bored top plate , but my concern when I have bored the hole  most of the machined area where the cylinder will sit will be gone leaving a ring of about 6 mm which should be ok, I think, but will seek advice here before I go ahead.

Engines / Lister TL3 engine has a loose valve guide
« on: April 28, 2011, 01:27:33 AM »
Hi all
I have a loose valve guide in a TL3 cylinder head and I would like to fix it if possible, the new goes in with a light tap with a small hammer,, my first idea  was to knurl the guide with maybe a straight spline type patern or I could use  square hatch and the loctite it in, the guides are of a plain type with no flange to locate them, any ideas would be welcome
