Generators / $99 harbor freight generator?

Anybody have any experience with the 800 watt 2 stroke generator Harbor freight advertised for $99  ?   I picked one up yesterday but havent had time to open the box yet .

Generators / Help me size an alt and battery bank to 4hp petteroid

I purchased the nice little Kissan 4hp Petteroid from another member here a few months ago.  I have run the engine a bit and I am very happy with it and finaly ready to build a small generating system around the engine .

I have decided on using an automotive type alternator to charge a bank of batteries and an invertor for my 110v needs .  What alternator would work well with this small out put engine?

Here are a few pics of my generator build using one of the cat/perkins/shibura diesel engines a few of us purchased from surplus center  . 

I am building a couple of these at the same time and will be working hot and heavy over the next few weeks to get the project done. I have cranked one of the engines up and it runs like a top . I am unsure if I will be bolting the sheave (pulley) directly to the flywheel or if I am going to build a simple pto (bearing supported stub shaft mounted in a bell housing) .

I am leaning towards the pto to eliminate the over hung side load on the crank bearings .

More pics to follow over the next few weeks as these come together.
















The generator is a brushless 8kw stamford/cummins type purchased from Tom at Georgia Generator in Millidgeville Georgia. Super nice guy and always easy to communicate with.

General Discussion / British heat engine (mortar) restoration

thought I would post a pic of a 2" bore Brit mortar I restored last year to live fire condition since technicaly it is a non reciprocating heat engine .

Work only began after receiving my approved tax stamp from BATFE to reactivate as a live fire destructive device .  This one is a real blast to fire , not quite the range of the 60mm US mortar but very portable. I still need to paint the tube and the aiming strip .

Generators / Which gen would you use on the 13 hp cat diesel?

I plan to use one of the Chinese 8kw stamford clones from ebay   , ebay auction number    150342728389. 

The engine makes maximum torque at 2400 rpms , what speed would you gear the engine to run at?   Is there another gen you might choose for this engine?

Listeroid Engines / Any one have cad or dimensioned drawings for the lister?

The thread on scale engines along with my love of working models has me very interested in building a 1/3 or 1/4 scale working lister model . Does any one have or know of prints , dimensioned drawings or 3d drawings of the lister cs?  I have a very complete machine shop , pattern making experience and access to a foundry so casting and machining the parts (up to 400lbs) is not an issue.

I have built a number of working engines from casting kits and I dont see anything terribly complicated other than possibly the fuels system . Any help greatly appreciated

Listeroid Engines / Listeroid price and avail in US 2009?

I have been reading thru the forums for a few weeks taking notes on sources for Lister type engines and I see quite a few importers that no longer have engines. If I understand correctly EPA regs have limited the availibility of imported engines.   I have gone nuts and have a couple of chinese diesels in route and I think I am ready to purchase a Listeroid.

General Discussion / New guy Just saying hello

Joined the forum a few days ago an have read almost every post over the past feww weeks. Thought I should introduce myself before baraging the group with stupid questions that could probably be answered with the search feature.
I live in north Florida , wife 2 kids, multiple pups etc . I own a cnc machine shop and work mostly in the firearms industry.  I dont currently own a lister but I do have aprox 40 other engines ranging from modern to old hit and miss antiques and a number of working scale models.
I have a keen intrest in the listeroid , just have to wait on the right deal to pop up, hope to find something at the zolfo springs engine show .

I have ordered one of the changfoids from a seller on ebay and will be setting it up with a 10kw gen in hopes of replacing the 5k/11hp propane genset we use as a backup for the house. Like rocketboy I am in Fl and there are times the power is out for 2-3 weeks straight and we like the AC on those 100+ degree days.  Hope to experiment with WMO as I have aprox 1500 gal on hand and one of my customers disposes of aprox 200 gal a week. I have a HATZ that runs well on well filtered WMO at 70% just require frequent de-coking and warm up on straight #2.

Also working on a larger genset , I have a 50 hp ford 4cyl that I am pulling out of an old directional boring machine for the project , would like to generate enough power to run a couple of machining centers in the event the power is out more than afew days, need 15kw continous . Based on how involved the ford head is to pull to de-coke I will probably use straight diesel or maybe diesel/UVO mix.
