General Discussion / Re: Off grid

Thanks Tim,
For the input. I must have missed your post, appologize for the delay. I do get to reading every post eventually. This forum is my major classroom on the learning curve to the future. With all the emphasis on global warming (with treats of drought & wild storms)...along with Peak Oil looming in the background. It seems to make good sense today to have some kind of independent security backup, if just for peace of mind.  Now that the politicians are getting in on the scene, maybe we have come of age. I doubt the direction they take will be mine.
I like your set up and thank you for your input. It makes good sence. binnie

Hi Jim,
Hit me if I'm wrong...but from what I understand (and I am just learning this stuff)....4 pole gen heads give a 110v/220v output option and the 2pole only the 110v output.
At 3600rpm from a lister flywheel you would need a tiny pully on the gen head to get that speed. Am I right? binnie

Sorry Lendusaquid,
Missed your earlier post with the explanation on the breather thing. I would call it a Pulse meter to measure the heart beat, breath by breath. Your engine sure has character and a great sound to go with it. You are right, it is alive! binnie

Hi Tim,
With 50 gal of Diesel per year, you must be using the gen set only to boost your battery bank when it is low. I am planning the same type of set up...but down the line (in the future)...At the moment it is just a genset back up for grid failure. I do plan to keep my connection to the grid..but eventually use it as the back up, instead of my own set up. This is taking some thought. I have a Listeroid, 12/2 Jkson...for main back-up source should the power go out & I need the help. I have purchased a SOM 6/1 for low peak periods..appx 3kw draw in the eve....and am looking at Solar & wind with batteries, controlers & inverter, to supplement the future & reduce the strain on the gen sets for longevity.
You mentioned you have a 3kw set up of solar panels...do they stand alone or are they roof mounted? Are they tracking the sun? How many pannels & appx what was the initial investment for the solar set up? I have heard of a new technology out of South Africa. that may come on stream making the pannels much cheaper in the future...not sure if it will happen or not..but waiting to see. Any input on this? How long have your panels lasted? Have you had to replace any? Are you in a snow area...what happens to them when they are covered with snow...like 2' of it?
You have wind, all be it minimal input, but do you find the investment was worth the effort? I am in a climate (Que. Cda.)  that has a lot of cloudy days & snow with short sunlight in the winter, but a windy invironment...I will really have to take some readings to determine if it is worth the effort or not.
I love the idea of being off grid, free from others whims of brown outs & higher & higher charges for less & lesser quality of service...just need to be my own free spirit I guess!
I am seriously looking at the solar option & any input from your long term experience would be appreciated. Is there anything you would have done otherwise? You are a man before your time, and I admire the independence. Thank you for your post,  binnie

Listeroid Engines / Re: How to time the injection?

Hello Lars,
This problem has come up before on the forum. You are not alone. I am not sure if I am giving you the right information here. If not than you may do a search of the archives....some people use creative titiles for their problems that leave us in the dark when we try to find them later. Here is one that may help you. I have a 12/2 Jkson and have had no problems so far, but I know it can be frustrating whenever something goes wrong or won't work. Hope this is helpful...read through the thread. binnie

Here is a basket case....but..it is not advertised as an SOM but closer inspection shows it was....has a cracked head...not shown...but stated. However good flywheels, all the selonoid features intact and a dedicated original base for the genset.(I saved the pix & blew them up for a good look). Could pick up on the cheap! If anyone is looking for parts...no interest so far.

And here is an item that was advertised as an SOM and obviously is not...no interest shown, no bids, time has ended and no takers...anyone interested in an original 6/1 might want to call the tele number listed...and check it out further. Wouldn't hurt would it. The listing has ended. binnie

General Discussion / Re: Newbie looking for reccomendations
« on: February 23, 2007, 02:25:54 AM »
Whow!
I take back all the little "nasties" I said about your programme. It sounds like you are almost home free from grid charges & only a year and 1/2 to break even point. Not a bad set up at all.
If you are considering a Listeroid for back up "if,as & when" the grid goes down occasionally....not a bad idea either.
Should you be looking ahead to WTSHTF and you want/need to incorporate your present set up with a potential to run your whole house for a longer time period...you have another cost expenditure to consider with the inverters, batteries, etc. or you might want to consider investing now in a larger than a 6/1 lister & gen head  for future potential & peace of mind.
With your expertise in electricity you are well placed to convert the system you have one day to your own use, if need be.
Enjoyed your article, never seen a stand alone wind set that high without guide cables before.
Keep us posted on your decisions, the reasoning behind them and your progress. We all love listers. binnie (thanks for the input & the article).

Are you telling us that you receive only one bill a year from your grid supplier and that could be a credit? binnie

Typical of a Gov't instigated programme to buy back your power generated from your capital  investment at wholesale price & then sell it back to you at Retail.....and to leave you in the dark when they can't deliver.
You would think that there would/could be a provisional  switch on the system to disconect from the grid when it goes down and operate the system as a survival back up. You already are generating more than you need. I supose incorporating that kind of a switch would null & void your present contract along with your insurance co. Coverage! (Was there an incentive offered to do this installation?)
Wonder who's welfare they are thinking about? Don't you feel your being used....just a little? Enlighten us pls.
I would be tempted to go off the grid & use the system you have to run the place & get a generator for back up of your own down time.   Just another thought..binnie.

Anyone remember this fix by "wwiprops"...easy solution. I do like Jtodd's suggestion for anyone who doesn't have easy access to vent.
