Don't be afraid to go it alone!

There's so many helpful guys on here you'll never be more than a few hours away from at least one reply that'll get you going should you run out of ideas.........

What sort of skills / workshop do you have? Some people here have every thing you can imagine and are the cause of much envy (Don't you, Ed!), others get by with nothing more than the kit you'd find in an ordinary blokes garage. The best bit of kit I have is a small angle grinder and a good supply of ultra thin slitting discs, next is a second hand arc welder.

As for the stuck gib head keys, there are pullers available on Ebay

A local machine shop could knock you one up or maybe you can find an outfit with a water jet cutter that does 'Saturday morning jobs' for cash.

Some one posted on here where they welded a long rod to the key and improvised a slide hammer, I can't see much resisting that.

I have a good supply of automotive tools, and am good with my hands, but have never tackled anything like this, but yes, getting over the "afraid of messing things up" is the first step!

I'm interested too! Having no machine shop I'd need the finished starter. Can you post close up pictures of how you mounted the starter?

Interesting method I'm not thinking I will drill my block though! I'm working on an offset bolt, and if that does not work out, Then Ill likely go with modifying the existing bolt and getting the offset through sleeves that will be drilled off center, to match my lash adjustment. Any local machinist should be able to make me a few of those so I have some spares. Thanks for all of the information! This place is a wealth of knowledge and helpful folks!

Edited to add: Does anyone have a picture of the base, dial indicator, extension rod set up on their engine? I follow how to get the measurement, but can't picture how to "mount" everything where the dial indicator is at 90 degrees to the gear tooth. It seems that you are measuring through the access hole and the dial indicator/extension rod would not be square to the gear.

I know from searching that XYZer used to make them, but stopped. I'm looking for a source for two of them. Does anyone have a lead on where they can be found?

Well I got some more done today. I pulled the heads off . The injectors had just a little rust on them in one spot. The cylinders looked good. I could see the hone marks, kind of a cross hatch. Did not see any vertical scoring, so I'm thinking, I had some relatively clean oil used for the factory run. The heads and valves had a fairly heavy black coating. I have not got  the heads heads/valves disassembled yet. I also have not pulled the con rods yet. Once I get a look at the big end bearings, I'll have a better idea of how clean my engine is.  Also noticed holes in my fly wheels on the inside. I assume this means they actually balanced the engine?

Great info. No Change over needed! I may worry about glow plugs later but for now I'll leave the plugs alone.

Awesome info and pictures! What did you do with all the solution afterwards? Anyway to neutralize it for disposal?


Edited: Score! Found a local machine shop that the owner is into old style engines, and has a few of the hit and miss type and knew what a listeroid was. He will oven bake at 800 Deg and then bead blast for $75! Sweet Deal I think!
