Thanks.

Engines / Found a 1972 SR1
« on: November 27, 2013, 07:44:57 PM »
I happened upon a 1972 SR1 that is known to have been well maintained and lightly used.  It has never been used or stored outdoors and is currently started once per month.  I would use it to drive a belt driven generator or direct attached if I could obtain the necessary adapters.

What would this engine be worth realistically.

Thanks,

Things I want to Buy / 1984 Kohler 8.5kw with Lister ST2
« on: December 23, 2012, 12:34:36 AM »
The seller originally wanted $3200.00 for this set.  It has 200 or so hours on the meter.  I thoiught 3200 was a bit high but he's recently contacted me and will sell it to me for $2250.00.  What do you guys think of this price?  i can load test it to 6kw and check that it holds voltage and frequency.  If it starts and runs well and performs well under a 6k load do you think 2250 is reasonable?

Thanks,

-Craig

Thank you both for the info.  The seller has gone dark on me so it all may be moot anyway.

Thanks,

I have a chance to buy a 2002 3 cylinder perkins diesel driving a 12Kw Mecce Alte generator head. Seems to run well. It has 5679 hours on it. The current owner had it at his camp and put all but 400 of the hours on it. He says he kept up with the oil changes etc.

I have 3 questions. Is 5679 hours a lot for a Perkins diesel? How many hours are they good for before needing an overhaul if well maintained? Is Mecce Alte a good brand for a generator head?

Thanks, any and all information appreciated.

That is pricey, and a bit far from me.  Nice engine though, brand new HR3.

Preferably a 2 cylinder but will consider 3.  I intend to build a generator so if you have or know of a complete genset  I'd like to hear about that too.

Thanks,

Does anybody have an opinion on a gen head?  I have an 8.5kw Marathon driven by a 3 cylinder Perkins 103-10 KD and it holds voltage very well under varying load conditions.  Is Marathon considered to be a good quality gen head?  Any other brands you'd recommend?

Thanks,

If I could find a genuine Lister CS I'd own it.  What I won't do is by a sand filled, casting voided, out of balance never ending project.

So would it be reasonable to say that an HR2 couipled to a 10Kw Marathon head with a supply of spare filters and an SE-350 voltage regulator would be about as reliable and sustainable as you could get?

Any recommendations on alternate engine or generator choice welcome and appreciated.

Bear in mind my goal is to keep it a simple (reliable) as possible.  Being able to start by hand if necessary eliminates the need for a battery and starter, air cooled eliminaties water pumps/ radiators etc.

Thanks,

Which engine is louder?  Listening to the ST2 vs HR2 on youtube it seems like the ST2 has much more mechanical noise.  Of course it is hard to tell for sure based on just youtube videos.

Overall, are lister air cooled engines really very loud?  I have read a lot about them on various forums and it has been mentioned a few times that they are.

Thanks much.

Thank you for the response.  Is the HR able to be started with a crank as the ST is?

If you were going to build a generator in the 8.5k to 10k range which engine would you prefer and why?  I want to build or buy one that is as simple as possible.  Air coolled eliminates radiators and water pumps etc and although I would like an electric start option I want to be able to start by hand as well in case the battery or starter decide to quit.  It seems like the ST engines are more common, and parts are more widely available. Is this true?  When would you choose an HR over an ST?  Which model is older or were they both produced at the same time?

Thanks,

-Craig
