Where are you located?
I'm located in Melbourne and i bought it from a chap from Tasmania who had it power his holiday shack for many years. He told me
it originally came from King Island where it powered the post office.

Is it a 4-wire 120/240 reconnectable output?
Sorry I  have no idea.  :-[ :-[There is no other external type of starter motor so I assume the alternator also acts as the starter motor.

Thanks for your reply.

Lister Based Generators / Lister SL1 Start-O-Matic Voltage Problem
« on: June 19, 2008, 12:24:17 PM »
Hi
The information on this forum was of great help to me when restoring a Lister CS 3/1 last year. I am back for some more help if possible. i have just purchased a Lister SL1 Start-O-Matic and have been told by the previous owner who was using the engine for many years that it was only producing 120 volts instead of its normal 240 volts.
Being a total electrical incompetent I was wondering where I should start. Could it be something wrong in the Alternator Control Box or a problem with the alternator  itself. Seems odd that it is producing exactly 1/2 its normal voltage. Is there a clue there? If someone can point  me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Original Lister Cs Engines / Why has my Valve Tappet Head been packed Up?
« on: September 24, 2006, 10:57:01 AM »
Hi
Been looking at pictures of original CS's and wondering why someone would pack up their Valve Tappet Head. Could
this be causing my Piston/Exhaust Valve problems.
Shall try and insert a picture.

Thanks

By removing too much metal from the head I have effectively reduced the distance between the valves and the top of the piston. I feel this may be the cause of the problem. If I grind down the valve lifter pin so that the piston is not hitting the exhaust valve when valve lifter is engaged that should fix the problem. What worries me is that even though  the piston and  valves are not  hitting when I turn the engine over  by hand under normal running conditions they may be too close.

Thanks

Hi
I have just finished restoring my Lister 3/1 and turned it over this afternoon for the first time. It turns over fine when the valve lifter is not engaged but as soon as I engage the lifter the piston hits the exhaust valve. Does anyone have any idea what may be the problem. The head was in very
poor shape and that was machined maybe thats the cause. Until I talk to the machinist on Monday I don't know how much he shaved it.            Head to piston clearance is set to 0.055" a tad more than the Lister reccomended 0.050". I removed the valve lifter pin from the valve lifter and that seems to have fixed the problem. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: 3/1 Head Gasket Thickness
« on: August 01, 2006, 05:03:41 AM »
Thanks for that info Brian, gave them a call and they have them in stock. Not genuine Lister but better than the
$189.00 I'd been quoted for a genuine gasket set.
Did find a company in Thailand   www.gasketstogo.com   offering one off  gaskets for US$15.95  plus US$5.95  to Aust. They look to be a pretty slick operation and offer good service for any type of gasket.
Much easier to buy in your own backyard though.

All the best

Original Lister Cs Engines / 3/1 Head Gasket Thickness
« on: July 31, 2006, 03:12:14 AM »
Hi
I,m new to this forum, though I have been lurking here for a few months.  At present I am restoring a 1937 3/1
which used to run a shearing shed in SE Australia. I have found much of the information on the forum invaluable
especially on  Gib Key and flywheel removal etc.
Could someone please  tell me what is the thickness of the 3/1 head gasket as I may have to try and fabricate my own.
Thanks
