For what it's worth, Despite what you may have heard, dog sled is not the only mode of transportation here in Alaska. We actually have automobiles airplanes and boats too. Up here we have his magic green liquid that when mixed with water, the water does not freeze. LOL

I also live on the kenai peninsula where the temperatures seldom get below zero for more than a day or so.

Glad it worked out for you. I no longer live in texas, I now live in Alaska. I am looking for a listeroid and a 3 kw st type generator head for my landlord. His electric bill s 800 to 900 a month. You can run a roid here 24/7 @ 300 rpm to charge batteries on straight diesel for under 300 dollars LOL. I want to set up a power plant for him.
I am not too concerned about condition, he is a diesel mechanic and parts are easy to get.

12 inched insulation and 10x14 on the inside. Think about it, at any given time you take up about 3 sq feet of floor space.  What ya gona do with the rest? Heat it? I also use a version of the rocket stove to heat with.

Gotta laugh at some of the comments. Some people don't realize that if it works food some and not others, those it didn't  work for, didn't do it right.

I am living off grid and dry in Alaska now. Sure wish I could make power from cold LOL. A 12 volt gasoline generator works best for me at the present. I get 8 hrs/gallon so power only costs about $50 to $75 a month for power. Power here is double every place else. My neighbor has a fan and tv and it costs him $150 a month. I have over 7000 hours on the engine does not burn oil yet. Air cool mower engines are normally good fo a rebuild after 1000

Refrigeration is great. Just cut a hole in the wall into the refrigerator.

I have a 12 volt DC desktop computer and monitor, not an inverter.

I also have an indoor outhouse that doesn't smell in a 12 x 16 cabin.

Oh yes, I only burned 1 1/2 cords of firewood last winter. My neighbors normally burn 10 to 15 cords.

Well, that is about it.

When I first came here everybody told me that I would ruin my engine running it on WMO and there was absolutely nothing on Youtube on it.. My how times have changed.

My health has declined and  don't get around much any more but I thought I would check into the site and contribute an update.

My engine is still running well. I was showing it to somebody the other day and I said it probably would not start because I had not started it in a couple of years. Assume makes an ass out of me LOL, it started up the first time the piston went past TDC. The fuel system has had WMO in it continuously for something like 8 or 9 years so it looks like my method of checking and treating the PH has worked fine. It also shows that WMO does not go bad like diesel and biodiesel do. Great for long term storage. I got an email from an old friend the other day. he had to pay huge amounts of money to dispose of a thousand gallons of bad diesel fuel that went bad. Now he has decided to take my advice and switch to WMO. Not only is it free, it is good forever.

I am a little confused on why you would adjust the ph in WMO? Adding lye to the oil doesn't seem right to me. And also where do you get litmus paper for WMO?

I think he adds only water for testing, and if it's too acidic, adds both Water & Lye for adjusting and , and uses ordinary everyday litmus paper to test the water.   When the water tests fine, he de-waters the fuel.  At least that's how I'm understanding his process.   WMO tends to acidify while it's in use in the engine (combustion byproducts)

I have about 50 gallons of waste motor oil. Nearly all of which is Mobil 1 synthetic. The mix consists of 15-50 M1 from my turbo Miata + power equipment, 10-30 M1 From my Ford F150 (M1 since new, 200K now), M1 ATF from the Ford and some 5-40 Delvac 1 (M1) from my diesels.

I decided to keep it in a series of mid sized barrels for the Listeroid. However, I ran out of room for more oil. So I took the oldest barrel, sitting for a few years and started siphoning the oil from the top. I let the siphon push it through a 0.5 micron Motorguard filter. It takes all night to get a gallon. The oil comes out charcoal amber, with an obvious clean look about it. (not that it was ever dirty).

I mixed it at a ratio of about 1 to 3, oil/JetA.

The results so far are staggering! The car runs very smooth, has much more power and is generally much more pleasant to drive. The throttle response is great!

Some of this is due to the additional viscosity resulting in higher pressures. If effect changing the way the pump operates. Some of this may be due to the additional energy content of motor oil and some due to the effective cetane. I picked up about 10MPH top speed and a good bit of fuel economy too. The car simply takes less throttle (oil) to cruise at any given speed.

In any case, it is a welcome addition to my trusty Diesel Rabbit.

Many people have "guessed' that synthetic oil won't work well, or won't burn well. I find just the opposite.


My engine has more power and less smoke than on diesel. Listeroids are supposed to have the piston scraped after 700 hours I think. there was nothing to scrape on mine, just a little goo which was not there at 1000 hours when I pulled the head again. Still nothing to scrape.

I was just wondering how many people are using a centrifuge for old used motor oil and what are the down sides ?


I use a Dieselcraft centrifuge. I now have enough of a supply of oil I can let it stand for a year before running the Dieselcraft. It is surprising how little there is left to filter. I can't think f any down sides. You don't have to buy filters. so far I have over 2000 hours on the original golden rod 10 micron fuel filter with gravity feed.

one of the coolest things i ever saw in regard to nitrous and a diesel engine
was at seattle international raceway about 5 or 6 years ago

a couple of old dudes brought a single axle Kenworth with a twin turbo 8v71 detroit with an mt40 allison 5 speed with two 120lb
nitrous bottles.

super single rear tires capped as slicks

ran low 11's in the quarter in exhibition

pretty cool, not a top fuel dragster, but it got all us diesel mechanics up off the bleachers :)

I just did a 4 hour load test of my 195 with an ST10¬  on 15-40 WMO today. Nothing fancy, started on diesel and when the engine temp got to 185 degrees¬  I changed over to WMO. No pre-heat. Oil temp was at 70 degrees. No smoke at all until I reached 9kw then it was a light gray up to 10kw where it started to turn black. The engine seemed to like it. Less noise. Engine temp at 10kw was 210 degrees. I switched back to diesel for 30 minutes prior to shutdown. I think the WMO makes more horsepower than diesel. On diesel the HZ is 62.5 unloaded and 56.0 full load. On WMO the HZ is 62.5 unloaded and 59.3 full load. Not very scientific but educational for me.


As an update, I now use 100% wmo. It works fine down to 10 degrees F without starting it on diesel.

I have used wmo in my engine up to 50%. At almost 500 hours I had the head off and found little coking, no corosion and no cylinder damage.

I run my wmo through a dieselcraft centrifuge filter. I do run it a lot longer than necessary, about three hours for around 7 gallons. I process about 7 gallons at a time. I am still running my original Goldenrod 10 micron fuel filter on the engine. I check the PH by taking a little oil and adding some distilled water and shaking it up and let it settle, I then check it with litmus paper. I bring down the PH by adding some Sodium Hydroxide and water and letting it recirculate. Before I found a source of Sodium Hydroxide, I used draino.

I have had no problems so far.

There are thousands of emergency standby generators in Washington State. Some of these sites must pay to have their WMO disposed of. I have sources that donate their oil to me. I don't even charge them for it!

The answer to would I use oil that is of unknown quality? Only during WTSHTF times. But then any oil will be like gold.

I will say this. If I found a source of WVO I would not use WMO. And I would not make BioDiesel out of it. I would filter it and use it as is.


I charge people $1 a gallon if they drop off small amounts. I don't make anything on that because not much comes that way but it does pay for oil changes, engine degreaser and grease. If they have a 55 gallon drum I pick it up for free. The best part is that unlike gasoline or even diesel fuel which eventually goes bad, WMO is forever. I have enough that it sets for a year before I even process it so there is already almost nothing in it. It has already settled to the bottom. Whenever I want some more, I just put a "WANTED" request on freecycle.

Does not seem to be many posts in general but there is no posting in waste motor oils.
Am I the only person using it to generate electric ever day?
People say they are using it and then they go very quiet.
A lot people talk about generating there own power but 2 years on they are still talking about it.
If your using wmo as a main fuel every day in a generator lets hear about it. 

I bought my Listeroid with the intention of testing the WMO theory because there was not much on the internet about it. I did track down several people who have been running 75% or more WMO in diesel engines for over 25 years. I was prepared to rebuild the engine if it did hurt it, but so far, it hasn't even gotten broken in yet.

I have been running 100% WMO for several years. Well over 2,000 hours. the engine runs cleaner and with more power on WMO than on diesel fuel. I can turn an automobile alternator at 30 amps at 300 rpm on the engine before it starts to smoke. On WMO, I can run it up to 35 amps before it starts to smoke. Under normal full load it has only a slight bit of smoke visible on diesel. Absolutely no smoke on WMO.

As for that hilarious post about WMO damaging an engine, I suppose it would if you did not filter it or bring the PH down to neutral. That would ruin any engine. I find it pretty odd that anybody could be that ill informed about engines that they would do that though. I would classify that with the rest of the "INTERNET RUMORS".

I use a basic biodiesel processor to process the WMO with a Dieselcraft centrifuge filter that brings it down to 2 microns. I now have 2000+ hours on the original goldenrod 10 micron fuel filter. My fuel does not have a pump, it is gravity feed so if there was any obstruction, my engine would not run. I have no plans to change it till it starts to affect the running of the engine just to test it out.

The bad:
My intention to put a steady load on the engine with a grid tie inverter is, at least for now, not achievable. This means the engine will only be used as an emergency power backup system and it will not be usable for house heating as I had hoped.  I do not wish to turn off the hydro feed but even if I did, the steady state power consumption here is between 1000W and 1500W for the majority of the day and that is (IMHO) insufficient for a load for the engine.  My average daily consumption based on the utility bill is between 40 and 50 kwh. There are also the occasions when using the kitchen or washer/dryer where power requirements exceed generating capacity. To run off grid would require a setup that contains a fair sized battery bank and an inverter that assists the generator when needed. This of course is achievable with the proper injection of cash into the project but I don't feel it will be satisfactory as compared to being hooked up to the grid all the time.

The result:
I will finish the odds and ends that still need doing but the project is, for all practical purposes, finished until I can figure out how to put a continuous load on the engine that does not involve talking to the utility company or the electrical inspector. At the moment I can't see any solution short of somebody offering me a truckload of slightly used deep cycle batteries for the cost of providing them a good home. I could put a resistive load (heater) on the engine but that just seems wrong.

There are a lot of other projects around the house that have been neglected and it is time to catch up on those.


It sounds like your engine might be a little big for the load on it. Just a thought, since most of my load is charging batteries and a battery charger automatically shuts down as they charge up, I use a rheostat on an automotive alternator to set the charge at a rate that suits the load on the engine at a constant rate. That way you could set a constant load that coincides with the minimum load. Is that clear as mud?

If the electrical load from the house should go up to the point that you need the full power from the generator, maybe you could put in a relay to cut out the alternator all together. Then when the load from the house drops, the alternator would cut back in. Somebody should be able to come up with some type of sensor that would sense a drop in voltage to activate the relay and turn off the alternator. Of course you could also shut off the alternator manually when you know the load will be big.

I have 6 golf cart batteries and charge about 30 to 35 amps without a regulator. These are enough that the batteries do not overcharge or even heat up. I only add water about every 5 or 6 months.
