Original Lister Cs Engines / 5/1 rebuild
« on: February 03, 2013, 09:00:33 AM »
Hi everyone, not been on here for a while.

Sorry about that, but at 46 I have just been blessed with my first child to take over my small dirty engine collection. He’s now just 2 and that’s how long it’s been since I looked at the engines. Just no time to do anything and toddlers and stationary engines are a bad mix.
Any way, has some kind person got an idiots guide to putting back together a Lister CS 5/1. I completely stripped  it down before William was born and now I cannot remember how to put it back together. They are simple enough but I have new crank, big and little end bearings and don’t want to mess anything up by doing a shoddy job. I have the usual manuals but they don’t exactly tell me which is the best/correct way to restore the engine.

Thanks in advance for any info. Ian

Original Lister Cs Engines / head gasket
« on: June 05, 2007, 09:20:29 PM »
has any one made their own head gaskets. Im tired of stripping the head
to decoke and find that i have to buy another gasket. I'm thinking of
getting Cu sheet say 1.5mm thick and using the old gasket as a
template, drilling the holes for water and engine studs. I'll cover
both sides with sealant.

What are you thoughts on this?

Thx Ian

P.s. has any one come across an Onan 48S-6 WW2 battery charger? i now
have one and want to get it going again so need a parts list/manual.

Waste Vegetable Oil / Re: heating the injection line
« on: November 17, 2006, 08:51:44 PM »
At the moment I have a two-tank system and switch between diesel and WVO on start-up and shut down. The thing is the amount of dino I use to do this. I want to reduce my reliance on diesel.

Firstly, is it wise and possible to heat up the injector line and start up on WVO and where can I get an injector line heater in the UK?

Are these things usually 12v.

If it’s foolish to try this, any suggestions on reducing the amount of diesel I use to start up/shut down. Could I tap into the fuel line after the filter with the diesel but before the fuel pump (and maybe use a two filter system)?

Thx Ian

there are casting dates on various parts of a CS. on the crank case there should be a number, single letter from A to L, then a two digit number. the first number is the day of the month, the letter is the month (A=Jan, B=Feb, L=Dec), the last two digits is the year. mine is 3L53. there is also a casting mark on the inside of one of the spokes on the flywheel. again mine is 8L53. this is just a rough dating as the engine was assembled in early 1954.

you have to thank Ken Boak for this.

Can anyone give me a step-by-step instruction on reassembling a CAV fuel pump for a 6/1. I’ve stripped mine down to clean and I have gone wrong putting it back together.

Thx Ian

Generators / gen head
« on: July 25, 2006, 06:49:33 PM »
i understand that a gen head of 2.5kw is just about right for a CS 6/1. if the gen head was rated above this, (lets say a 4 or even 5kw), but the draw was only less than 2kw, would the CS be able to cope with such a big gen head. i only ask as i have the oppertunity to get a 5kw alternator. thx ian

Other Slow Speed Diesels / coventry victor
« on: May 23, 2006, 01:37:26 PM »
Does any body have experience of the above engine? It’s the AD2 model. I’ve just acquired one and know nothing about it. It runs for a few seconds then dies. I want to run it on veg oil some time in the future when I have cleaned it up and got it A1 condition. It has new piston rings but missing the engine cowl that feeds cold air around the cylinder head. Also are there any web sites that could help me out.

Many thx, Ian
