Things I want to Buy / Re: AC Meters Wanted
« on: May 15, 2014, 09:01:12 PM »
Richard,
Thanks for the info, but as you say they do appear to be 'top end' products and thus would probably be beyond my budget. Meanwhile I have managed to get some modestly priced meters via Ebay - not as vintage looking as I might like but hopefully functional. If these do not do the job your info will give me an alternative source; thanks again.

Mike,
Forgot to add that these would be variable resistors, so as to give me a resultant 1.2 ohms.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for this. I'm using the original resistor which is wire wound on a ceramic tube core, with an adjusted value of 1.2 ohms to get 240v. Not sure what the original wattage of the resistor is, and the parts list for that item quotes 'refer to works', so they obviously had to tweak each machine individually. I think I'll try two 10 ohm, 30W resistors in parallel with a good air gap between each one, as I'm not sure how you attach a heat sink to such a resistor. As an aside, I had to change the direction of rotation of the generator to match the engine; as a result the fan blows air out of the outlets on the driven end (at quite a rate) thus presumably sucking it in at the non driven end. Is this now backwards since I changed the direction of rotation & do you think this would make a difference? [There is nothing in the manual about this].

Cheers,
Kernowman

Generators / Voltage Drift on a Brush SCAF generator
« on: May 07, 2014, 07:32:06 PM »
Hi All,

I have just finished the rebuild of my Lister SR2 Genset, comprising the aforementioned SR2 directly coupled to a Brush (6kva) SCAF 2.25 generator. Thankfully it produces the correct AC voltage after a bit of adjustment of the no-load resistor, and it appears to handle voltage regulation OK with changing load, so I assume the aux field bits are working as well. The only problem is that there is a gradual voltage drop (from 244 down to about 236) on a constant 20% load after about 10 mins running, and the rate of voltage drop appears to increase with time. I've checked the engine speed and this has dropped a bit (presumably due to slight changes in the governor as the various bits warm up & expand), but not enough to account for the level of voltage drop. The only other thought I had was that as the no-load resistor warms up with the current running through it, its resistance increases, thus reducing the excitation current & thus the output voltage. Am I right & if so any ideas as to how I can get around this problem?

Many thanks,
Kernowman.

Hi All,
Has anyone got (any or all of) the following for me to complete my SR2/Brush SCAF 2.25 generator project.
0-300v AC Analogue Voltmeter,
0-30A AC Analogue Ammeter,
40-60 Hz AC Analogue frequency meter?
Location the far SW of the UK.
Many thanks,
Kernowman.

Generators / Re: Parts for a Brush SCAF 2.25 Generator please

Hi Mark,

Before I got your post I had contacted a firm called ECCGenSpares, who apparently took over the spares holding for the small generator range from Brush themselves. They have managed to supply all my needs - and more - at very attractive prices. Their tech guy, Bill Ward, is most helpful & I would definitely recommend them for small Brush generator spares. However I'll keep your suggestions in mind as a backup for the future - many thanks.

Best regards,
Kernowman.

Hi Phil,

I've just got some parts for my SCAF 2.25 from ECCGenSpares (who took over the Brush spares stock for the small generators from Brush themselves). Very good value & their technical chap, Bill Ward, is very helpful. Would thoroughly recommend them.

All the best,

Kernowman.

Thanks for the pointer. The location is the Ebay shop for Sleeman & Hawken (Lister agents), and it contains largely obsolete parts that they have not been able to shift for years. Unfortunately the specific bits I wanted were not among them - always the way isn't it! Thanks again.

Speak to the guys at Morris Lubricants & they will be able to advise (then shop around to find where to buy it at the best price!)

Cheers,

Darren does have the parts, but he wants £76 for the AC brush holder!

Thanks for the tip.

Generators / Parts for a Brush SCAF 2.25 Generator please
« on: March 24, 2014, 11:55:44 AM »
Hi,
I have recently acquired a Brush SCAF 2.25 generator which I hoping to couple to my Lister SR2 to re-create the full Lister SR2 Gen Set. However the genny is a bit battered but basically sound, and I'm looking for the following bits:-
DC Brushes part codes 1173014/01 (same as 064-82181/002) 7/8" X 5/16" X 1&1/8" long - ideally 4 but I could get away with 2.
AC brushes part code 1155193/02 (same as 064-82180/001) 8mm X 16mm X 20mm long - 4 off
AC Brush holder part code 1155671/01 (same as 064-82170/002) - 1 off
Flange guard part code 1194010/01.
35mm split boss coupling, part code 201-12793.
If anyone has got any of these to spare there is a good chance you will get added to my Xmas card list.
Thanks & best regards.
Clive B.
