Changfa Engines / Changfa glow plugs
« on: October 05, 2011, 03:06:37 PM »
Hi All,
I'm new to this board and this is my first post.
I have a Changfa 195 coupled with a ST7.5 generator and a car alternator.
It's primary use is to provide power and/or charge my solar batteries when the sun isn't shining or the wind is not blowing.
It's located at my daughters camp in the Berkshires of Mass., off grid, where the nearest grid power is miles away.

At any rate, starting this beast is seldom a problem except when it's below freezing. Have tried various ways to assist starting with questionable results. What has worked best for me in these situations has been to give it a slight whiff of starting fluid, a procedure that I am leery of. Even at that it takes a bit of cranking
So after doing some searches on Google and various boards as to glow plugs for a changfa and finding no solutions I decided to make my own.
Fortunately my engine is a IDI type and has a start assist plug (chinese glow plug  ;D)
What I have done is to machine a similar plug and then internally threaded this plug to accept a glow plug.

I have installed one of these into the engine, unfortunately we haven't had any cold weather to really try them out all I can say is that when I started my engine and I actuated the plug the engine revved right up and it stopped smoking (usually smokes a bit on start-up). This is work in progress, I have re=machined one of the adapters to allow the glow plug to go deeper into the pre-combustion chamber.
I had the engine running with one of these plugs installed for several hours and all was well, no leaks or stuff like that.

Sorry for the long post,
Hank
