General Discussion / Re: Jury rigging your A/C

For Guy’s information, there is a huge London building which was designed in the late 1950’s. It draws 1 billion imperial gallons of Thames river water through heat exchangers in the building, which in turn cool air for circulation throughout the office areas.

The tunnels which carry the pipes to two sumps (inlet & outlet) under the Thames are half the size of the Northern line tunnels.

Such a system is now prohibited, as nobody is allowed to warm the Thames in an artificial manner. However, this example of conservation saves millions of KwH every year.

Good news indeed for UK board members. Do keep us updated on progress, and the quality of machines received.

General Discussion / Re: Peak Oil sceptics take note

It was not a refinery, but a large scale depot. Availability in the London area was tight for a few days, but prices were held.

Katrina and Rita have severely damaged a number of offshore facilities, including pipelines, and the damage has reduced Gulf of Mexico production. This has impacted the global oil price, and continues to do so.

Incidentally, there is a BBC report today stating that the spike mentioned by Guy was caused by a fire in the UK Gas Network (Rough storage facility). The BBC is notoriously ignorant of the energy industry, so it will take a press release from the relevant infrastructure operator before the facts are clearer.

That is simply the way the UK gas market works. There is no storage – your boiler /stove is burning hydrocarbons under which were under the North Sea 3-4 days ago.

Gas is landed at three primary locations – Aberdeenshire (near Peterhead), Lincolnshire, and Norfolk. There is tremendous concentration of the entire UK gas supply at these gas plant locations. The Interconnector, which supplies imported gas from continental Europe, is co-located at one of these plants.

This concentration means that a shutdown in any plant triggers a spike in the gas price. Similarly, any offshore problem has a knock-on effect. Dozens of wells export via one pipeline.

It simply virtually nothing to do with Iran, although that does impact the oil price, it does not cause spikes in the UK gas market.

I could go on about uninterruptible versus guaranteed industrial gas contracts. However I’m sure there is a text limit on the forum!

Other Fuels / Re: Propane Injection

Hi pa73,
To cut thru the "unnecessary" political BS, IMPO, to use "superchargers" or "fuel enrichment boosters" as an occasional power boost is the wrong way to go, with respect to reliability and dependability. I'm not saying it can't be done, but why not run a higher HP engine, or consider applying one of these horsepower boosters full time.

Kevin

It is more complex, and introduces potential reliability problems. However, having excess capacity for 98% of your runtime is inefficient. It is a choice between complexity and relative inefficiency.

However, from this discussion and some  google-based research I've understood that the power increase is probably minimal. Nice idea, but not one I will take forward. Thanks to all for their contributions.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Supersizing

How about having the right-size engine with a LPG kit for dealing with peak power needs - see my explanation here....

I read the linked article and wondered if LPG injection could be used for an instantaneous power boost.

Some members run an 8/1 or 12/1 to have reserve power in their genset. Others have observed that a 6/1 cannot start their air compressor. Would it be possible to eliminate the need for reserve power as follows....

Your electrical power needs lead you to specify an 8/1, but in reality you only need 2-3KW for 98% of the time. You fit your engine with an accurate tachometer and linked LPG kit. When speed drops, LPG is added to the intake. So you can add a near-instantantaneous 1-2KW to your engine with LPG injection. And 98% of the time you have a right-sized engine with the good fuel economy.

Just thinking aloud. I haven't a clue how to do it, although I ran a BMW 730i on LPG for 3 years.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Listeroid Register

Ken,

Excellent idea about the register, and I hope this post bumps your idea to the top of the board again.

However this is what I wanted to ask - who is bringing Listeroids into the UK? I had thought that there was no point, with an unrestored Start-0-Matic on E-Bay for £160, and decent 6/1's, complete with history, available for £500 from a dealer in antique engines. There is also a dedicated Lister parts seller on ebay.co.uk.

Regards,
Tim
