Title: Is this Lister important?
Post by: linda@heritas.com.au on January 19, 2023, 10:49:50 AM
Hello everyone,
Seeking comments on a Lister that exists in a shed, attached to a house, in a National Park. It's been dormant for at least 20 years. My company is assessing the heritage significance of the entire property, and I'm stumped with this piece of machinery. Is it rare? Does it have any significance?
Photos attached. All comments welcome!
With thanks in advance,

I'm probably not the right person to answer your question, and I'm sure you'll get more comments, but I would say not much heritage value, sentimental value might be higher.  To me it looks like a 1970's era SR1, but I could be wrong.  As I'm sure others will tell you, please post some photo's of the serial plate.  History can usually be determined by the serial number.  Also, location will make a difference to the value.

Should also mention that there are a number of enthusiasts in Australia, whom i'm sure would be keen to check it out for you depending on how close they are to you. (I believe Australia is a rather large island)  ;D ;D

That series of Lister diesel is not rare nor highly desired by collectors. It does have some value.  It's only real significance is being original to that property?

Hi Linda, welcome. Those S series engines are not uncommon and not particularly collectable. There are a couple of interesting features, one is the fuel control actuator on the front of the engine, the other is the aluminium rod connected to the decompression lever. It would appear that someone has tried to create some sort of remote start/stop mechanism. Is there a control panel on the wall somewhere?
If that control panel says StartoMatic on the front then the unit is more collectable.

It`s heritage value is really dependent on what it was connected to, a great many rural properties had generators like this to provide power to the homestead. Some where used to provide power to sheep shearing sheds, Lister made a lot of shearing equipment. Vintage shearing equipment has become collectable.

Yes it is a common engine but being a genset it has more value than just an engine alone. If it is going to be removed please don't scrap it and let us know what National Park and State it is in and then could find someone with interest in the complete set up.
If possible what State and district is it in?

Hi Cobbadog,
It is within the Guy Fawkes River National Park, northern NSW.

Hi Linda, I used to live up that way in Nymboida, we got burned out in the 2019 firestorm, I am very surprised that this wasn`t destroyed by the fires that hit that area pretty hard. I`m with Cobbadog, please don`t allow it to go for scrap, I`m now living in Tasmania, so too far to drive. Cobbadog lives within a few hours, if it`s going for scrap please let him know.

We trampled through that park about 6 months ago and enjoyed it very much. Thank you for letting us know where it is. I'm over on the coast at Coopernook near Taree. If possible keep us inmformed as to what is inteneded to happen to this litle beauty.
