Title: What is this?
Post by: Sam1987 on July 12, 2022, 01:31:07 PM
Hi,
I recently bought a lister d, and in the process of taking it apart to restore and rebuild. First time doing this so learning as I go along.  Something I could do with some help with though is the following… inside the part that you would fill with water, there is a large amount of greenish cotton wool  type stuff. (Photo attached).  I’ve obviously been careful - gloves, mask etc.   Is it asbestos? Or something less sinister? When it’s filled with water, I can’t really see why it would be asbestos? Any help appreciated, there is quite a lot of it stuffed down to the bottom!

looks like the remains of a scouring pad. Why it would be in the hopper is any ones guess. Toss it in the bin and continue with your restoration. Keep us up to date as you make progress and if I can offer a bit of advise take lots of pics as you strip it down so you know where the parts belong. Remove the cap from the magneto when the engine is at TDC so you can see where the cam lobe is sitting for timing purposes. If you can search the web for a workshop manual.

Hi Sam1987, I think Cobbadog nailed it. Whatever it is/was has no place in the cooling hopper.
I`ve rebuilt a few engines but never done a Lister D, looking forward to lots of pics and commentary on what you find during your restoration. Please ask any questions you like, there are a lot of experienced people here.

Good luck,
Bob
