G'Day MArk and welcome to the Forum.
It might take a bit of time but you will get some help from memebers wo know about generators. Also try posting this in the Generator Section of this Forum.
What might help you get better responses is listing some or all of you problems so replies can start.

P.S. We drove through your neck of the woods about 2 weeks back heading to Cooma. Now working our way back north along the coast to home near Taree.

Thanks for the kind offer. Not too sure when we head South aain but have plans to do so just not sure as to when.
same if your ever up North near Taree call in ad have a look at the varied selection of tous from stationary engines, tractor, small dumpy truck and mowers just for starters.

Its still bloody wet here and the grass has grown so long in 3 weeks that the cows down the street are eyeing it all off. Our Dumpy is a Liner Roughrider with a SR2 in it.

i want to know about the rotating voltage regulator . mine is driven by a belt off the crank .
it looks a bit like it doesn't belong there

They're usually driven from the crank between the back of the engine, and the alternator by a pulley, and belt, and bolted to one of the side rails,or mounted above the flywheel,or driven by a motor usually mounted by the end of the exciter dynamo, anything else bud?

I would like to put on top .To tidy up the generator .

I must admit i've got mine mounted on a display board seperate to the generator, when we're out at shows with it,and use an electronic avr, when we use it back at the yard, but i'll have a look for a picture for you of where they usually go

Managed to find some better pictures, one of how i've got mine, and a side mounted position, and an end mounted motor driven, can't find any of an Isenthal mounted on top unfortunatly

Thankyou very very much .
I now have something to work with . My gen set has only 1000 hrs on it .
do you have any details about using An electronic AVR might be a better solution . I will have to build a roof for mine and some sort of sides to preserve the unit .
Thanks to all

No worries,we went down the electronic avr route,as we had one hell of a problem with the original set-up when we first bought the generator,it was missing it's Isenthal regulator, and was in a quite serious overvolt condition with no manual control whatsoever on the handwheel,on our set the switchboard has been moved from its normal place on the side,to the rear of the alternator, and a wire had been put back wrong on the terminal block inside the alternator, and said wire was also put on the back of the terminal block where it couldn't be seen,we went down the electronic avr route after watching a video on youtube, which led us to an old boy here that specialises, and makes avr's,and after a phonecall sent us the one we needed(i'll put the address, and type up),fitting it is fairly easy,on your set, behind the switchboard will be a vent, and access to the rear of the alternator, and behind it will be a terminal block,on which you'll see two wires going to the sliprings, run the set up,and see which one is positive, and which one is negative, and then take them off away from the block, connect your avr up according to its instructions, and away you go,when we first fitted ours,it wouldn't self-excite from start,so first of all we used to flash it from the batteries, but you must run the flash wire through a blocking diode,as as soon as it powers up,it'll try,and put the field volts back into the batteries, blowing the fuse on the avr every time you do it,eventually we sorted out the original problem, and use the original system to provide initial excitation, until the electronic avr catches up,and takes over, but you must have a blocking diode in the positive lead from the electronic avr,and another in the lead from the original set-up,to prevent the new avr back feeding into the old system,so one diode from the terminal that field wire positive came off, going to the field wire, and your wire from your new avr connected to the field side of the diode, with a diode in the positive lead from the avr,i'll put the address up of where we got ours from, but i guess you'll have someone more local to you,it wasn't a cheap avr,but it was going to work out cheaper than buying various ones off ebay, and seeing which one actually did the job,as it goes,it's a bloody avr, from full load to off-load in one hit, there's no voltage spike whatsoever, and i've managed to wire it all up,that i can use either the electronic avr,or use the Isenthal when we're out at a show, and take its cover off,and display its contact points, and solenoid working 😀😀
