Cutting disc.  Heat.  INOX.  Force

Looks to me like the key has spun on the shaft. You wouldn`t believe that this was possible but when an irresistible force meets an immovable object something has to give. I`ve seen many shafts on reduction gearboxes with similar issues.

Well done for getting it off without too much damage.
